We have noticied that breeding dates vary from November to February. What dates are you guys breeding? And WHY do you use that date? (Really focusing on the why)We are more interested in southeastern farmers because we are in Alabama, but any feedback is welcomed.

Southern Edge Whitetails

I try to do my ai first week of November because in my area the peak of the natural breeding in the wild should be mid November. So I want to stay around that time frame. My first fawn's are born on the 15th or 16th of May each year and I do see some fawn's that are born in the wild around that time as well. I would like to do my ai around the 25th of Oct if I thought I would have as good of luck, but my reason there would be so I could be off hunting some where in early Nov not waiting around here to do my ai. I am going to ai 6 fawn's this year around the 20th of Dec, I waited that long on them to let them mature another 6-7 weeks.

I'm sure others have many different reasons, but we have southern deer so we try to breed around the time they would naturally breed. The people who have northern genetics in Alabama usually breed in November. My understanding is that if you try to move your breeding date greater than a couple weeks ahead of their natural breeding period, your success rate could be reduced. Maybe other farmers could shed more light on that subject. Obviously the earlier born, the better their first antlers will be and greater chance that a doe fawn can grow large enough to fawn their first year.

That was what I was thinking smckinney. But also trying to coincide with other farms that are using the same vet would also be a good point for southern edge Whitetails to think about to try and keep a little cost down too.

I am in south Alabama and only breed southern deer. I breed in mid January because that is when the rut occurs naturally here. You can move the date up but the further you get from there natural breeding the lower the success rate will be.
