I am new to the deer farming thing thhis year. I bought a buck fawn last year. He has small 3-4 inch main beams so far. The problem I have is tonight I noticed that both the main beams are broken off right below the pedicle. I do have several other deer in there with him. What would have happened to him? Was not sure if a doe with new fawns could have clocked him and broke them. Any advice would be most appreciated!

I don't know that there will be any telling what may have caused this to your buck. But I would keep a very close eye on him to see if he's bleeding and most of all make sure that flies do not get into the wound. There are some great people on this forum that you can call that will help lead you in the rite direction. If I can be any help to you feel free to give me a call, if I don't know I will do all I can to find out an answer for you.

Is he bottlefed or can you get close enough to see that it is below the pedical? If its below then you have broken skull plate in there. If so you may have to take the antlers off above the pedical so the weight is off the bone and there is enough there to heal back together. You wont want to take them all of as to not leave holes into the top of his head. Pic's would help but if not, Keep a real close eye on him the next few days!

Thanks for the information. Ths buck is bottlefed and very tame. To look at hi, it just looks like his antlers are low set antlers. But when he walks or moves his head fast...you can see them move. I noticed one was this way a week ago, but just noticed the other one was broken yesterday. He is still eating and moving around. There are no open wounds on his antlers or head. Not sure what happened to break them. The break is for sure right below the pedicle. I touched the one that I noticed last week, and it appeared to be a little less loose. Do you suggest that I contact a vet or just let them go for now?
