I have a doe that I darted and her leg is broke I feel now. It flops and is swollen cannot put weight on it. What do we do?

I guess I should explain myself better I have searched the posts and most are broken lower than mine and everyone says to let her alone but I am just seeing if there are any new ideas

Travis where is the break? Do you think the dart did the damadge or when she went down.

I feel the dart did the damage. I have a cartridge gun and it was the only 1cc dart with a 1" canola. I have the I'd feeling its either the leg or part of the hip socket. I know it was my fault and I'm one of those people that hate to sit around if ya know what I mean

If its up that high i would think there is not much that can be done. I had one a few years back the the vet put a cast on that was a high leg break but when she would pee it would go in the cast. Then they put pins in the leg to brace it and it held!

They are some tough animals and will bounce back from some crazy stuff. IMO i would get her in a pen with a couple doe fawns and let her get through it. Keep her feed and water close and easy to get at! Good Luck with her!

Get some meds in her to reduce the swelling and help with pain!

Travis,

I feel like what you have read about letting her alone is probably the best advice to take heed to. In my past experience, I have put the cast on a couple fawns with a low to mid leg break before & it hasn't worked out, but I know folks that is has worked out for. Many times they will break the other leg trying to get up. On a high break near the joint, I have always been told that putting the pins in them under a $600+ surgery is about the only way to have a chance & then infection around where the pin protrudes is hard to keep down & generally ends up the demise. I darted a yearling buck about 2 years ago that I hit about 3-4 inches above the knee and broke his leg. I left him alone. In 2 weeks he was putting light weight on it. In 4 weeks he was walking on it. In 2 months I couldn't remember nor identify by sight which one it was. I would take the chance and let your doe be.
