buck semen collection

Hi everyone,



I read in a past post that some people have lost bucks during semen collection. I was wondering what the cause was. Was it do to the tranquilzation or the collection process itself?



Any thoughts?

Anytime you put an animal under there's a chance of complications whether immidiate or later on from pneumonia for example. I don't think the collection process is any serious threat to the animal.
 
Ok, I was just wondering if there was some kind of negative affect to electroejaculation in deer. We use Electro in cattle, sheep and goats all the time with no ill side affects, but usually do not need to tranqulize the animals with above said species. Just run them into a shoot (or with sheep and goats just hold them).
 
some animals do not do well under sedation,get sick , aspirate into their lungs.... just certain animals??? could it be genetic???, has anyone ever tracked their problems with tranq????

I moved our AI does into the pasture with the back-up buck yesterday, the does were just milling around grazing with me trying to encourage them to go through the 14 foot gate, I though it was safe... there just does....my back was to the buck pen , I was about 1 1/2 feet from the wire and the buck from my avatar hit the fence at full speed and moved it at least three feet, a pair of insulated carhart's prevented major injury, it just added to my education and I'm walking a little slow today.. well ok alot. Never heard him coming but the round purple bruises on the back of my left thigh will keep reminding me for a couple weeks, yeah right just hold them
 
I never said just hold a deer, I said we just hold sheep and goats. That would be like just holding a Bull. Not going to happen in MOST cases.



I would not expect to collect a deer that way without tranqing or having a squeeze or something. That is what we do with bulls, run them into a shoot. Some of the heavily handled bulls that have semen collected via electro ejaculation regularly, you can just use a haulter and nose ring with, but most you need to restrain more than that.

Hope you recover quick. My boys also were in pens this weekend cleaning waters.One with bear spray in hand one cleaning jug waters.Thanks again bringing light to the danger.

There are some farms in Canada that are collecting in a chute without sedation. Not sure how big your nuts have to be but I'm not into it. Nonetheless, in the future if the process is better-accepted, you could kiss goodbye your worries about knocking a buck down just to get semen.
 
there was some collection done in a chute where a different drug was used , it made the buck docile and lethergic, you can medicate daily and collect numerous times,I think five days????

any details, it would seem this would be a much safer way for the buck involved.
 
I think Len Jubinville of Decalayna was involved, with some of the trials. I think Len reads deer farmer, or the first person to see him ask him for a responce
 
i tested semen collection in the chute after learning about it from Shawn Shaefer. The first 3 went well not using any drugs but when got to Full House Jr we lost him to capture myopathy. I scraped the practice and went back to traditional electro ejaculate with no losses over the past year.

Would like to learn if our failure was due to not using sedation drugs?

Ok, here is another question for everyone that has freezes deer semen.



I have a friend that helped out with collecting and freezing elk semen. The facility she went to ran a cow into a heavily made shoot system, then ran a bull in behind her. When the bull went to mount the cow (I am assuming she was in heat) they diverted his ***** into an AV and collected from him as you would from a bovine bull at a cattle facility (assuming "again" that they had designed the system so there were multiple access areas for handlers). Does anyone here have or have heard of collecting from a buck using an AV such as a goat or sheep AV?

I know boars (swine) are collected in a similar manner; however, a trained boar doesn't even need a female, just a dummy to mount. A gloved hand provides the stimulation and semen is filtered by clean cheese cloth and then dropped into a clean bag that lines an insulated coffee mug. I doubt the filter would be needed for a deer because boars provide an extra gel that helps the semen remain in/beyond the cervix long enough for fertilization to occur, and I don't believe a buck would have that extra gel. I'd like to see a buck tame enough that you could collect him on a mounted doe, though.
 
I had a friend that had Tigers and they use the autoejaculater and never had problems ...but they aren't stressed as easy as deer.

But another friend of mine has race horses and each horse has its own fake rubber ****** over the collection cup, they lead him up to a real or fake mare he mounts and they hold they cup while he does his business...

I would say it may work if you put out a deer decoy with doe in heat scent and a heating pad/collection cup...it would take some work, but I bet some deer could be convinced to use it...some ideas that come to mind coveR decoy with real Deer pelt and tail up... cut out area for warming pad and cup...?????

Hell if I know??? Make a video if ya try it...If it works it could be great, if not it would be worth a laugh or Two!
 
I can tell you we have never collected semen in the chute and don't intend to try. You collect from your best deer and we wouldn't take a chance stressing them out - I just can't quite imagine that. Anyway - Painted Meadows - some good ideas but not sure if it would work either. I could see the buck knocking down the decoy and tossing it around or something. Oh well ---
 
How about a device that is placed into the does ****** that is like a sock and when the buck breeds her , you run her into a shoot and remove it with the semen???????? A heavy condom more or less with a large rim??? Jim

The guys that did Our AI said that they helped a deer farmer do this very thing in Indiana last year with dreamcatcher. They Said that the collection worked fine.

They AIed the next day with fresh semen.
