Bumps under the skin??

We have a gladiator over Maxbo doe fawn that is very gentle. When feeding her treats I noticed a large bump on her shoulder and a smaller

bump on her neck close to the shoulder, both on her left side. We knocked her down to give her 1cc nuflor. the larger bump busted and drained. It had about 1 tablespoon of puss and left a hole 1/4". cleaned wound & sprayed with vetracyine. Has any one seen this before. What could have caused it?

Oh yeah- this was not any kind of wound to start with- the bumps where under the skin & did not hurt her when you touched them.

I do believe what your seeing is an abcess !!! All it takes is a little prick of the skin for bacteria to enter !!! What you have done is fine !! I have just left them burst on their own then clean them up !! Most of the time other deer will keep them cleaned out by licking them !! Hope this has helped a bit !! You will see plenty of these over the years and you`ll see they don`t pose a big threat !! I have see them from marbel size up to a volleyball !!

If you can get a sample of the puss, a vet can culture and test it. If it is CL then you have to isolate the deer from all your other ones and be sure none of the puss is where the others will be exposed to it. CL is rare in the deer world, but common in goats. Yes, deer can get it and it can infect your entire herd. The testing is cheap "peace of mind" in a situation like this.

Thank you both for your reply to my question. As of yesterday her wound is scabbed over and it is looking normal. We are fairly new to raising whitetail, and we have found this forum a wealth of knowledge. Thank you again & wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving.

For future reference...

If you have it cultured they will tell you what antibiotic will be best to fix the problem also....whether it's Gram Positive~ Gram Negative ect.
