It might surprise many of you how Christmas in America came to be what it is. It hasn't always been this way. The first three states to declare Christmas as a legal holiday were; Alabama in 1836, Louisiana and Arkansas in 1838. The south viewed Christmas as an important holiday but in general the northern states held true to Thanksgiving as the most celebrated day. Abraham Lincoln saw this and had a cartoon drawn with St. Nicholas surrounded by union troops. This outraged and demoralized the Rebels and credit can be given to Lincoln for his contribution to psychological warfare.
