Does anyone have any resources to any research done in Fallow deer for color genetics?

G'day fallow.

The true colour for fallow is the common colour.White /blue ,black /chocolate & menil are the other three basic colours in fallow, these become more common as the result of domestication .These four can be broken down into a further 30 colour variations (at least).

An example is, my hungarians are a "dark common" & the persians are an "orange common".I cull any variants or morphs at birth. Some folks like the dark/chocolate, fallow best but remember this is not their "natural" colour.White fallow are not popular with those who do a lot of work with fallow, although they are popular with collectors.White fallow are considered more trouble than the others,& often "mad".I would not purchase any fallow for breeding from a breeder running herds of mixed colour or heritage.A herd of all "menil",fallow can look ok in the right setting (manicured lawns around the castle, etc.lol),however just one of another colour spoils the whole "look".

On genetics, Hungarian fallow which should be "dark common" generally produce the heaviest antlers. The world record buck at the moment, under the "douglas score" I believe is a Danish buck & from a "menil" herd.Colour is not considered important for antler developement.Remember fallow are one of the most domesticated animals & have been farmed for at least a couple of thousand years.Yours originated in/are indigenous too, "anatolia" (Turkey).

Cheers Sharkey
