I am wanting to dart a red stag to tag him. He is very gentle so I can use a syringe instead of a dart gun. What would be a good medication to make him "drunk" that would also be safe? And where would I get this medication? Thanks!

Red deer stags vary in size from 150 kg(small english) 250 kg(German) 350 kg(Yugo). If the animal is quiet & in yards( not outside) 1.5 mg/kg xylazine works on mine.If the animal is outside with people or other animals about I would add 2mg /kg of zoletil(telazol).Dont forget to wait 45 mins to reverse the xylazine, this gives time for the tiletamine to metabolise.I would strongly suggest you establish a professional relationship with a good vet.If your stag is this gentle ,isn't he dangerous in the rut?

If you want to tag the bull I think I would wait until the antlers are off to ensure your safety. If they are cut, then you should be safe. I would also recommend that you fully sedate him to install the tags as opposed to just making him "drunk". Animals not fully sedated, will be much more stressed. To sedate a red stag, you can use xylazine alone as opposed to mixing with telazol. That way, you can reverse immediately if you want to.
