Could anyone give me there opinion on using diatomaceous earth to deworm deer, I have heard a few different thoughts on it. And when is the best time for me to start deworming my deer.

never heard of it....now is not good when you are breeding......atleast two times a year you should worm............I would use a wormer if it was me.....but maybe it works ....good luck

I have used it. Don't know if it really worked or not. I asked my vet about it and he just laughed, and said it does not work. I do not use it any more.

i use it! i put it in our feed for 5 days a month( usually the last week of month) at a rate of 2.5 oz per 50lbs of feed. Now it doesnt kill all types of worms so i follow up with a regular regiment of Ivamec plus or Epernex every three months. Have yet to have a fecal (sp) come back positive yet. so i dont swear by it but what im doing is working so i will keep doing it till it stops right.

I have only used it on the ground in the pen. I heard it kills insects the come in contact with it so I used it to see if it would help reduce the insects in the pen to give the deer more relief from summer bugs. As for my application, it worked a little. I know organic cattle producers use it to deworm their cattle cause they cant use conventional dewormers.

I won't comment on if it works or not, but I want to warn everyone to becareful using it. In it's powdered form it can be very dusty. The dust when breathed in WILL destroy your lung tissue and cause severe damage. Years ago I drove truck for a living and hauled this stuff on occasion from the plant in CA were it is mined from the earth. There is a "pocket" where it became deposited when an area of seabed dried up. It is widely use in a food grade quality for filtering wine, beer, and many other products, among several other uses. The workers in this mine area actually wore self contained oxygen equipment while working in and around the factory and mine due to how dangerous it is if breathed in.

Since that very informative article came out in Deer Tracking magazine last spring, I have been having this added to my feed at the dosage recommended in the article. They put it in before they pellatize it and the dust does not seem to be a problem. I don't know if it works or not, but my deer have never been in such good shape. Like so many things in this industry, "to each his own".

If it is mixed into your feed through a pellet form or even a loose feed mix with molasses I wouldn't be concerned about the dust then. I only mentioned what I knew about it so folks are careful using it in the powered form and not breath it in.

you have different risks with all the medications we use with deer.

I use it like it. for me it is just another percoaution to easily treat deer im not handeling on a regular basis.and Roger ive been told the same thing, and were a surgical mask while applying to a damp feed to let it mix with pellets so its not airborn when feed to deer. Dust is bad for us im sure its bad for them.
