I've got a doe fawn that is 10 days old today. She's been eating great and growing fast, but today she got very dizzy and flopped to the ground. She layed on her side for about a minute crawling in cirlces very disoriented and then came out of it. This has happened twice today. She's still eating well. Any suggestions?

After late last night and this morning's feedings I'm sure its a seizure. I'll try the bo-se. I appreciate all the input and I'll keep you all posted. Oh, and she was in a new fawn pen with lots of plants availible. I seen here eating alot of dirt and plants. Poison may be a possibility. Thanks again!

Might also give her a shot of Bo-se if she hasn't had one - white muscle disease could possibly be the problem.

I agree with Wild Rivers, white muscle disease could be the problem...

In 2002, I was faced with a similar problem with a fawn at 7-10 days old - here is a link to the post; HELP!!! week old doe fawn goes crazy.

It was also suggested by the very respectable "Thelma Morgan" that I try some vitamin B-complex injections high in Thiamine. This did not cure the problem, nor did the Bo-Se.

Vet also recommended reducing the amount of milk per feeding and adding additional feedings per day as he thought the milk was expanding the gut and putting pressure on the nerve that is connected to, or in close proximity of the gut. This seemed to help reduce the number of instances, but it was not the cure.

We worked for many weeks with our vet to try and figure out what the problem was. We administered a number of medications to no avail. After the fawn got bigger and stronger, and was able to stay on its feet, it would actually beat itself up running in circles to the point were it would cut and injure itself by running into things. We elected to cull the fawn.

At the time, a necropsy was not thought of. We have never ran into another fawn that showed these symptoms. Hindsight has convinced me that it was either a head injury or a high fever that caused brain damage.

Check the fawns temp to make sure it is not running a fever and call your vet ASAP....

Wish I could be of more help and please keep us posted as this issue always baffles me to what the problem truly is/was.

Good luck,

John

Maybe if you search the old deer forums you can find something on this. Laurie and I recall someone had this issue once but we don't remember what the results were if they did learn anything.

I was typing the same time as you John:)

Not a problem Roger... Hope those bucks of yours are growing well...

Also, I just want to add that weak back legs are a sign of selenium deficiency and should not be confused with circling or seizures. Bo-SE will indeed help fawns that can not use or are weak in their back legs...

Good luck everyone.

I have seen those symptoms in a fawn that got too cold and hypothermic..is that possible? was the fawn rolling/swinging it's head around in a circle?

Look at the symptoms in the deer disease document posted on this forum. Listeriosis comes to mind too as a possible cause.

Scott isn't Listeriosis usually caused by ensiloed or fermented feeds ? I know with cattle they will often times walk in circles and twitch a bunch . Could there have been something contaminated in the milk replacer much like in rotten feed stuffs ? I also think Listeriosis effects the face and throat muscles and the animals can't eat very well . Just asking ...
