Has anyone experienced a doe with a broken lower jaw?? It appears it is towards the tip of the mouth. Watching her try to pick up crab apples it seems like she cant bite them because the tip of her lower jaw wont shut tight enough. I am wondering if she will be fine eating the regular feed or if shes going to start losing weight. We are about to AI and I am wondering if it is a bad idea to take a chance on a good straw if shes going through this stress and everything. What would you guys do and do you think it will heal on its own or how are you supposed to fix it? Thanks

I had one do something similar - she did fine. I think it just depends on the individual injury, how far back the break is, and how her coping and compensation skills kick in over the next couple of weeks until the bone begins to graft back in. If you can treat her with some banamine and antibiotics, I am sure she would appreciate it, just for pain relief and preventative for infection.

I had an AIed little boomer doe fawn...She was playing in the rain she zigged when she should have zagged and boom...Right into the chainlink fence...her jaw was broke right behind her bottom teeth on both sides...I was worried that she would not be able to eat but she would use her tongue to get food into her mouth and her grinding teeth were not affected,, so in her case she was fine... It appears that it is healing well she never lost weight either...I was worried because she would drool alot and it was down to freezing a few times here already...I thought I might have a problem with that...But the drooling is almost cleared all the way up now...

So depending on where the break is... watch it and see if it can use it...or if things need changed for it to eat...
