Need help on how many Doe's per pen , it's are first A.I . Its scheduled for last week of November in Texas. I'am just afraid we wont be able to dart them on time for the cidrs removal. And then work them later on for the insert of the semen straw. I also haven't really called my A.I guy but just so I can prepare myself......any help ? anybody? or advise?

We did 68 last year but we had a handling facility with a chute. I think 40 would be alot with just a dart gun. Keep in mind you will have to knock them down three times.

if you want to do a quality job, your smart to plan ahead, why not plan two days 20 each day, How big are the pens that you will be darting in? an extra hotel bill and a few meals are small potatoes when things get done right. Cost of semen is your big cost, don't cheap out on the procedure to save $500 when your spending $25000

Pens are like .4 acres, and they will be like 2 people with dart guns. But I guess your right .....Do twenty a day to keep tract of Timing . How many doe's should I put in the pens...like 10 or 15 does. I have 5 pens available?

If you put 10-15 does in .2 acres you won't have room for 2 guys and a dart gun! What your saying here is your putting 40 does on 1 acre. Your going to kill some deer so don't worry about breeding them all. This technician isn't from Houston is he? If so nuff said! I'm sorry that just sits wrong with me!!! MONTY CARNELL, ZZ

how calm are your does ?any bottle feds? If you can put some of your calm deer in each pen. use 4 pens and rotate them into the 5th empty pen when working each consecutive pen. If your going to be doing this every year why not build an alley and a four plywood corrals ,tunnels and a squeeze? we run our does into our and put them into the squeeze to cidr and pmsg , back in to remove cidr's 14 days later, then 54 hrs. later back in the squeeze drug them and the into a corral set up with a room to lap AI , and we had two corrals for recovery. A deer handler works great for cervical AI quick and very little stress on the deer.

Soundsa like a disaster, once you start darting they go nuts, been there done that, first time not as bad second and third,it hard to get them to stop for shot i had to do in the dark second time gottr done but had to hit couple wherever, and ai did not work, could been stress dont know, still no fawns. looks like end july or august. if i had 40 does i would get chute now.you want to dart them in smallest pen or you be running them all night only my thoughts and what i saw.Dc Ps i havent done the math but the darts and telazol wil bout pay for chute, plus once you dart one with them running around it gets hard to tell the one you done darted. been there done that,DC

We do the same thing but not with the same numbers you are, I think if you built a small corral and ran say 10 at a time into the corral you could work with those 10 then move on to the next 10. You would have to plan your AI according to the first 10 having CIDRS removed and the last 10 having their CIDRS removed, AI'ing i that order.

This can be done very successfully but 40 deer are a lot to handle with this method.

We have an AI business and would strongly suggest that you reconsider the whole darting plan and invest in a handling facility. We have witnessed some horrendous outcomes with deer being darted three times for AI ing. One deer farmer we know loss 50% of the does that were AI'd after darting them three times.

Just for some rough numbers,

40 does darted 3 times each is about $2400 just in drugs.

120 darts is what about $600?

Semen that will be wasted because the doe didn't take from stress or dies afterwards? What is that value?

I think you add it up the cost of a new handling system will be almost paid for just from doing this a/i not to mention that now you will have a system for future use.

For your sake please reconsider.

I have 6 does (3 tame 3 not) in heavily wooded one acre pen. A couple of weeks ago I brought some friends over and we mosied into the pen. Next thing I know spooked deer are bouncing off fences.:eek: After dust settles I see one of my tame deer suffered from a lasceration on her skull. In my opinion one spooky deer can spoil the whole pot. Lesson learned. No broken necks. I got lucky this time.

20 deer in .4 acre pen with two dart guns? Make sure the camera is rolling.

We ahve darted for 3 years but only have done up to 8 at a time, first year we were 75%, second yr 100% and then last year we Lap AI and was 87%

So darting 3 times will work but as the numbers go up i believe a handling facility will become an absolute must

Thanks for the Replys......I am now working in getting a A.I Facility. Still plenty of time....once again .....Thanks A Lot !!!!:)
