E Coli in fawns

How effective is neomycin (biosol) against E Coli? A few days ago we noticed some of our 8week old fawns were showing signs of diarrhea (grayish in color and very strong sour smell, not yellow as expected from e-coli) so we started the 5 day treatment for cociddiosis, CORID. Today I got fecal results from 3 fawns that show light to moderate growth of escherichia coli. One of the fawns has just died. Will neomycin in drinking water combat E-Coli or I should I dart with baytril?

i can personally answer that question. i just lost five fawns before finally having one tested. i had two different types of e.coli. i gave them 1cc of genomycin which is a close match to neomycin with a bottle of milk.and 1/2 tmp tablet. twice a day. keep the ones your worried about isolated. i have not lost another since. if you use baytril it only combats one type of e.coli.

I am assuming he is talking TRIMETHOPRIM/SULFAMETHOXAZOLE is combination of two antibiotic drugs- Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim tablets

I also had e-coli this year. I want to try to not have this ground bacteria infecting my fawns next year. My recommended drug sensitivity were Baytril, gentamicin or neomycin. I used Baytril and gave 1/2 cc shots every day till cleared up.

Product information: Killed virus vaccine for vaccination of healthy, pregnant cows and heifers to protect their calves against diarrhea caused by Bovine Rotavirus (serotypes G6 and G10), Coronavirus, enterotoxigenic strains of E. coli and Cl. perfringens type C. Dosage: 2 ml IM. Pregnant cows should receive 2 doses at least 3 wks apart with 2nd dose given 3-6 wks before calving. Revaccinate 3-6 wks before each subsequent calving. 21 day slaughter withdrawal.

Back to my ideas on what to do for next years fawn crop to try to avoid this disease.

Have any of you tried to make the doe's have a better immunity in the fawns first milk. I'm thinking of using scourguard 4kc injectable to the doe's in the last months of PG to increase their immunity for E-coli. Anyone doing this already??

I have used this brand for my elk but not with E-coli and type C with no problem to the elk. I will try this on some deer to see if there is a problem using it. No products are approved for deer use but this E-coli problem was very hard on deer farmers and we have to try something even if this product is only approved for cattle.

we gave HeadGear fawn paste this year to all our fawns when we pulled to either tag and put back on mother or bottle feed. It Contains Encrypt, that decreases scour causing pathogens and promotes growth of beneficial bacterial in the digestive tract. Loved this product Will use it again.

That is the problem I had with Bar guard 99. I was always able to get it in a fawn within 20 hours but as was said it should be given before 12 hours. I know a fawn will suck mother's milk almost immediatly. If E-coli is in the ground the fawns will get it in their system before you will get the Bar guard in the system of the fawn.

The one thing I know is when the fawn first gets up it is sucking the mother's milk. That is the reason I want to fortify the mother's milk and maybe save the trouble of a sick E-coli fawn. I lost no whitetail fawns but did lose some mule deer fawns to E-coli.

Very few of my whitetail fawns did get E-coli but all my mule deer fawns got it except for the hybrid whitetail/mule crosses and one mule deer fawn which got the bar guard at two hours old. These fawns were on infected E-coli dirt from the very start so it was a good test for Bar guard.

I'm just looking for a better way to get the first immunity for E-coli into the fawn so as not to have the heartbreak of a fawn loss or a sick fawn if I can prevent it. I will keep everyone informed on how the scourguard 4kc works with the doe's and hopefully I will see very little E-coli next year. I will also use Bar guard on birthed fawns just to try to increase the fawns resistance to E-coli.

i know my problem with my fawns was because of having them to close to each other. one would get scours and the others would keep licking it and two to three days later would have problems. the only way we got it under control was to seperate the sick one then clean the pen with a water and bleach solution every other day. the genomycin definitely did the trick though. good luck with the fawns. and those tablets that i was talking about are the sulfa tabs that billiejo was talking about.

We condition the soil in our pens to keep a 7.6 or nutural soil test taken annually. This helps us keep parisites and other pathegons to a min. Not to mention helps with food plots and vegetation. This may help or may start a hole nother topic.

hey another thing i have done with my fawns is give them that new probiotic called shock effect. it really seems to help them.

I have a fawn maybe 3 days old with a yellow direaha, should i give it baytrill and if so how much, and can i give it orally. Thanks
