Today we saw an eagle in a tree 30 feet from a mother and her fawn. It has been circling the ranch all day now. Is this a problem. Will the eagle take a fawn. If so anyone have a suggestion:
Shoot it along with the bear!!!........no,no I'm only joking!! I'm sure that an eagle will take a fawn but if you do anything to an eagle it would be worse than killing a person. Hope that it don't take your best fawns.
Yes, eagles will take newborn fawns. There isn't a whole lot you can do about it since eagles are protected. After a few days the fawns are bigger and not in as much danger - it seems just the first day or so they are vulnerable. Like we've mentioned before, we have those plastic barrels in the pens and if you can get the fawns to lay in them most of the time they are protected.
I have seen eagles take baby fawns and baby sheep. I had a bald eagle here last week and it was right over some elk calves. But mother elk are very aggressive so it went away. You could move the deer to a different pen. Being our countries bird and all I guess you just watch it and hope for the best.
We have a fully stoked trout pond. The eagle has been siting around it for years. Must have got sick of fish. But we are applying pyrotechnics permit. Problem taken care of. lol
My best doe had trips on the 19th checked them all at 10:30 that night the next morning about an hour after frist light I went out to the pens and one of the fawns was gone.
I see bald eagles from time to time and that day I saw a golden eagle not far from the pens we have a lot of owls as well not sure what got her but she is gone.
We have had newborns taken by bald eagles in the past. One thing to consider is to get a place were the fawn can lay that is covered overhead. We've used plastic barrels cut in half lengthwise, and with the top and bottom cut off. Faws will lay in there and the eagle can't get them. First week or two are when they are most vulnerable.
I make tee pees from tree branches about six feet in diameter and as high as my head. The fawns find these and live in them all summer. No eagle or owl can fly down and grab them under these. Jim
I think we need to respect our protected animals.....we want people to respect our whitetails.....I would never want a fawn stolen by an Eagle and the eagle is doing only what it has to do to survive........they will move on if they are scared....they will go look for an easier meal........S.S.S. theory good in some situations but this is not one of them!!
We met with Wildlife Services today to discus the eagle problem. They have not yet issued us the pyrotechnics permit, they would like to wait and see if any fawns die with eagle marks on the body. We will follow up with them tomorrow to avoid any fawn deaths. In the mean time my father travels the pens at dawn and dusk to keep the eagle at BAY I hope Applecreek obtains the pyrotechnics permit and my parents add this new job description to my summer. LOL
