I don't have a picture of him but this is a 4year old buck that has swelling under his jaw only on the left side. Which happens to be the same side he has had lumpy jaw for 3 years! Now the reason this concerns me is we have lost 11 to EHD type 2 so far and only saved one. None of the deer we lost have showed this sign. (Swelling under the jaw on one side). So has anyone seen this in EHD cases or is it somthing else and how should I treat it? The only deer we have saved was walking stiff legged and we knocked him down iced him and gave 9cc exceed, 6cc dex, 2cc ivermec, 6cc b12, 4cc antitoxin, 3cc banimine, around 350 ringers (fluid). Thru everything but the kitchen sink at him and it worked.

I had a fawn that was doing that a few weeks ago. We just gave her meds and she got a little better. We gave her oxytet and exceed. Unfortunatly EHD did get the best of her about two weeks later and she died. I cant say for sure but I personally dont believe that the lump was caused by EHD.

It just seems odd that no other deer that I have had have showed this "one sided" lump before they died of EHD and its on the same side that he has had lump jaw.

Steve that is about the same concoction that i have been using. I have only lost 4 and treated 15 deer. If you have any concern that it might be EHD Load Him UP. If anything those same drugs will help with the lump jaw if that is what it is.

Just an opinion.

I caught these pictures on my trail cam of the first buck we lost. Look at the progression on the time stamp. He couldn't get up and this is where i found him dead. EHD is about as bad a way to die as i could think of!

Well just got back home from treatment on the buck.... I did everything the same but this time the buck did not have a fever and I stuck a needle into the swollen spot to see if it was an infection or tissue inflamed and nothing come out so my guess is EHD. we'll see how he does the next few days.

Hey Matt, How often do you treat sick deer? We have been knocking them down and treating with 6cc of exceede, 6cc of dex, 6cc of vit b complex, and 2cc of bannamine. Vet says don't use bannamine can make bleeding worse so I tried it without also. Was also told to treat every three days. I must say it does not appear to do anything but slow the process. We started treating every other day and appears to work better have had several responde and have been alive now for over a week but still appear sick. Laying around alot not eating much but does get up walk around some and browse for short periods. How often do you treat and how long? Thanks Rick

After the first treatment I wait 48 hrs and if they are still bad sick they are probably gonna die. :-(

If they have improved but not out of the woods I dart 3cc dex then wait 24 hrs and hit with 3cc of draxxin.

By this time they are either dead or gonna make it from the EHD.

This is when you have to watch for what I think is pneumonia. They are up and eating but not well and will start coughing. I've had two does go through this. I hit them 2x 48 hrs apart with 3cc draxxin and they have come out of it.

Now remember this is a kill them or cure them approach. And it has worked so far on MY farm. If you try this and it kills your deer I'm sorry but that is the chance you take.

I have not tested for ehd this year, but the last 2 years it has been type 2 and I have the exact same symptoms.

Some deer die no matter what you do. I can usually tell the first time I seem them, but some live. Is it the money and medicine I through at them? Don't know but I like a good fight and I can't just watch them die.

I understand what you are saying and appreciate your imput. I actually am doing something very similar but I was only hitting them with 2cc of draxxin. I will up it a cc. I haven't noticed the cough in this one doe but she is on day 10 and still seems drained. She gets up and feeds and will even come up for cookies , I might try some draxxin. Rick

Just out of curiosity, what is the temp up there right now? And what is the max that y'all would dart deer in? I've never knocked a deer down to treat for EHD, mostly because it hasn't been below 80, even at night, since May. Luckily, I'm not having EHD problems right now but just in case. It is just starting to get in to the 70's at night and I have 40 bucks to dart week after next but they are health deer and have a better chance of handling the stress.

Thanks

Russ

Luckly we have had temps around 65 at 6:30 in the morning when we have had to knock them down. It's still in the 80's at dark so all my darting occurs at dawn. Rick

I have been doing exactly the same thing Matt has been doing, darting with 3 cc dex and 3 cc draxin as soon as you see signs, It has saved more then half the deer that I know would have probably died from EHD without doing this. Some snap out of it completely within a day or so and others won't live no matter what you do it seems like. If you even think maybe an animal is alittle off, dart it with these 2 things and I promise it will help some of them. Last year I was giving Draxin w/o the dexemethosone and it didn't seem to help much but the Dex definatly helps on some of them. We had it all across the state last year and now again this year with the extreme heat and drought. I did get one of the foggers Wayne Green suggested and it really does a great job and has to help, money well spent, if it saves one deer its paid for.

Having EHD in your herd is one thing, but having to deal with it during a hurricane is totally humiliating! Just sayin.......

The only good thing about burying your deer in a driving rainstorm is that no one can tell you have tears coming out of your eyes.

Well Scott if it makes you feel better the rain has made it to Illinois. This is good for us because we are in the middle of the worst drought on record. So thanks for sending it our way. The only problem now is there are going to be plenty o f water holes for the devil flies to breed!

Thanks for the rain sorry for the loss!

I am beginning to support the idea of the pathogen vector for EHD not being only the midge. We know from samples that saliva and urine contain the virus, but during the last 3 days with all the rain and wind from Issac, I had 3 more deer come down with it. I doubt seriously if a midge was airborne during this weather event so the only way these deer could have been infected was contact with some of the other deer already sick in the pen. Gonna do a little more research and see what I come up with. What are yall's thoughts. I am aware of the research being done by LSU regarding this theory.
