EHD Questions and Food for Thought

Has the incubation time been determined, that is the time from when the animal has been biten by an infectious midge, to the time that visible symptems appear? Is there any cross immunity between the different strains after an animal has recovered from one of the forms of EHD or Bluetongue? Once an animal has recovered from the disease will it be susceptible in the following years? Will the recovered animal be a reservoir a month or so later or the next year? Can the animals in a herd be vaccinated by drawing blood from a recovered animal and injected into other animals in the herd to acquire some immunity? I know this process would screw up DNA testing but in the long run it may be a viable solution. These are some of the thoughts and questions that have plagued my mind since losing 2/3 of my herd this past summer and fall.

incubation is usually around 5-7 days before signs show...

I wouldn't think there is a cross immunity from strain to strain

thirty years of watching it i wild deer tells me that once exposed deer will be immune for several years and pass immunity to offspring..

an infected deer could be a reservoir for a couple of weeks but not a year, antibodies build up.

may all midges burn in hades....
