I heard that at Nadefa, some new treatment was announced to treat EHD? If so can anyone tell me anything about it?

From what I hear it is available and heard it has an 87% sucsess rate on the animals they used it on and with some amazing results. I believe you need to contact Dr. Joe Ables down there in Decature Texas.

But it also comes with a $500. per dose price tag. Hopefully that will come down in time!

Todd, I'm with you on that! from the folks who had EHD problems and were on Larry's product Bullet Proof the results were amazing!

Plus would be a lot more cost effective for the rest of us!

Thank y'all for the help! I just talked to Dr. Joe on the treatment. It neutralizes the virus itself. He also recommends probiotics,Fertile-Aid, and a spray system. Anything to keep the deer healthy. He was working, but replied to my email.

If you've ever been around ehd, you'll know that unless you are in the pen with them at least every couple hours they can be fine in the morning and dead by noon, it happens that fast more times then over a couple days. The ones that I noticed looking sick lived through it and the others were just dead within hours and I'm in my pens every couple hours daily. Usually when they look sick it's too late. I just recieved my vaccine from the deer breeders corp, $14 per deer for the 2 shots, one and then a booster 2-4 weeks later. Good luck either way, it's bad stuff for sure. Last year our whole state lost thousands in the wild and they say up on the Milk River in Montana they lost as many as 90% or more in places.

sdbigbucks,Are you talking about a bottle of vaccine like a 50 ml bottle that cost $250-$350 per bottle?

What we are talking about is a "single" shot dose and I was told they administered it to deer that were flat out and dying and recovered and the "single" shot is a one time dose for $500. per dose and per animal!

After talking to him I'd agree! I ordered a few to have on hand just in case. He has very little left, so I don't mind the price for insurance. Hate to pick my favorite child, but I'm gambeling on the the future of my farm.

Wayne, This is a link to the vaccine I was talking about. I had never heard of the treatment you guys are mentioning until here but sounds like it would be good to have on hand if you can afford it. The bad thing with EHD is when you get it, it's usually not just one or two, it's a bunch. And sometimes it kills em so fast they don't even look sick and within a couple hours they are dead. Last year we had an outbreak the end of August (which is normally when it happens here in SD) and again around the first week in October which I had never seen before. Nasty either way and every way to battle the stuff the better. Good luck to all and please keep us all posted on how the vaccines and treatments work. How does a guy get ahold of Larry and get some Pathfinder??

Who will spend 500.00 a dose just to keep it on hand" in case" they get end? By the time you see you got it and ordered it it would be too late when you got it..then if you buy it for stock and don't use it , what is the shelf life? Would suck if it went bad

The way I understood it at NADeFA, you draw blood at the first sign of EHD, send it to a lab and see what strain the deer has and then order the specific "cure". In my experience if the deer lives that long it's gonna make it on it's own.

Jason, That's been my exact experience also, if they live more then a day or even two they usually survive, amost everyone that dies from it does it within 2-10 hours of even looking kinda off. Anyone who has ever been around it much when the bug and disease are in an active cycle knows its not gonna wait for lab results and fed-ex. If the vaccine really works that sounds like the most cost effective insurance policy with better coverage. I have a couple deer that the $500 "cure" may be worth having around IF it works but no way would I even think about it if I had to wait for a lab result and shipping. Thanks Wayne for Larry's info, that stuff sounds like its worth trying.

We have been very fortunate. The last time our area was struck with the black plague ( EHD) we didn't loose a single animal. My direct neighbor lost over 70 deer. I contribute this three things. First the good lord. Second we were vaccinating with the EHD vaccine and third as Dr. Joe recommended we hammered them with probiotics. In my opinion without an antivirus you are really rolling the dice. The thought is to keep them as healthy as possible. It will help them have a chance to survive.

I don't think anyone is saying it's a "cure". It seems to boosts the health of the deer so they may show some symptoms, but have a higher probability of surviving. Larry can give you more information this.

Wow.. Sorry for being absent so long. It's good to hear the message about the EHD treatment is out and that people are actually taking the time to go to meetings to hear exactly what is going on!! There is a treatment and it has proven 87% successful. It is the first treatment that targets the virus by neutralizing it and preventing the virus from shedding viral particles, which causes the secondary signs such as pneumonia and gi ulceration which kills the deer. Guys, watch your deer very closely, at first signs, we must maintain vascular integrity with dexamethasone but not in pregnant deer. If you do not have treatment, hit with 5 cc dex(2mg/ml) per 100 lbs I'm immediately. Then excede at 3 cc per 100 lbs SQ. This does not stop the virus though, just slows body's reaction to the virus. Te treatment "Enable" can be shipped overnight to your veterinarian and stored at their office The treatment covers type 1&2 currently. As for price, well, it is very high tech and it works, you don't have to use it but ask those that have. Type 6 is exotic and we see at approx 1% last year. Contact your vet then have them contact me. [email protected]. If you don't trust me try your own treatment. Remember, the most important thing is very early recognition and if in doubt, excede and dex( non pregnant animal) will not hurt them if they do not have EHD. If you watch your deer close enough and regularly, you will be tremendously successful starting with dex and excede then "Enable" as quick as your can to stop the virus. This treatment does not kill the virus, just stops it from producing viral particles and gives the deer the chance over a 3 week period to build a very strong immune response. Deer treated last year have SN antibodies over 1280 meaning their immune response to EHD will be very strong for the next few years without vaccinations. If you knew you would get the flu virus next month, what would you do personally to prevent that chance??? Try a lot of vitamins, great nutrition, probiotics and decrease stress. Have a plan before the disease plans you. Be wise guys and God bless and good luck!!! [email protected]
