EHD Vaccines...........Do They Work ?

I'm courious to see what everyones thoughts are on EHD vaccines and their effectiveness?



I know I have talked to several Vets who believe they DO NOT help at all and have done multiple draws of blood on animals at different times after vaccinating animals and they claim NO signs of the antibodies present or multipling in the animals blood........



What's everyones thoughts do they WORK or DO THEY just give us a sense of security ?
 
I did not have enough vaccine to do all of my deer this year. When I started losing deer it started with those that had not been vaccinated. Now I am losing deer that had the vaccine and then the booster shot a couple of weeks later. I guess I can't say either way. Seems like when it got into the deer that had the vaccine the midges know which deer to bite first. The ones you have the highest hopes for die first.
 
It is my belief that you have to use the vaccine multiple years with multiple doses for it to help. I brought it three deer from northern Ohio last year treated them when I got them and they all died from EHD no signs one night dead the next morning. Deer treated for two years lived. This year I had 2 bucks that died. One not vaccinated the other the dart skipped. All others that got sick have lived. I now give the EHD vaccine every time i have my hands on the deer unless it is withing 2 weeks of the last shot.

I believe it is helping but it is not a cure!

Dr. Shipley says its like getting shot in the arm with a .22. your probably gonna live. If you get shot 50 times your dead! Give the vaccine and get shot 25 times you might make it through. Give the vaccine and get shot 50 times your dead! Deer get bite by midge flies all the time and live. Deer get bite millions of times and their probably gonna die! The vaccine is a preventative not a cure.
 
This year I vaccinated, boostered and reboostered after losing some last year and this year was worse, way worse. I really thought it would work, but I don't think it helped at all. If I would have spent the vaccine money on the fogger in the first place, I would have been way ahead, deer, stress and money wise. Again, the ULV fogger absolutely stopped it within a day, find the stagnant water sources, fog those areas midday and your pens morning and evening, get rid of the bug and you will get rid of the disease. I hope my herd should be somewhat resistant now, as much as they have been exposed to it.
 
I have to agree with those that say the vaccine had little effect. I lost deer that had been vaccinated for previous years and deer that had been vaccinated twice this year 21 days apart. Young, old no difference. Appeared to be a total waste for my deer. I used bulletproof on half my deer and I thought that was going to make a big differance. At first none of my bulletproof deer had gotten sick the first 10 days but within the next week they too started going down. In the end my surviving deer 25% vaccinated, 25% were on bulletproof, and 50% no vaccine or bulletproof. I do believe fogging my pens might have been a better use of my money. I will say the deer on bulletproof were heavier with nicer coats than the other deer but in the end just made a better looking cospse. Rick
 
In a word the answer to your question is NO! My deer had been vaccinated annually and with boosters for 3 years. All of the deer that died from ehd-2 had been vaccinated, except for the 2-3 month old fawns.
 
As I'm sure you all have seen on here Newport labs has a new vaccine posted on here. I would assume since it appears new non of you have experience with it? Just wondering if it has any better results? Probably too early to tell
 
I will vote NO, I dont think I will ever waste the money on them again. I dont think they help at all.
 
I definitely agree with the fly control aspect. Let's get these little suckers. What type of fogger do you guys recommend? I've been reading a book called "The Hot Zone". It's a true story about level 4 hot viruses that have spread throughout history and never had much media coverage. Ebola, Marburg.....the rough ones. But the interesting correlation is that most of the level 4's are hemmoraghic viruses. They've found that most of these do pass from species to species and are extremely contagious. I just found it interesting.....that's all. We've all been dealing with this EHD bad this year and yet again, here's another hemmoraghic virus that not a lot is known about......hmmm. Most of these viruses have known origins from the rainforests in Africa.....Mount Elgon and such. We definitely need way more info than what we have on this one. Hopefully there are virologists working on this one as we speak.
 
This one is the ticket, the Adapco guardian 55 ES, its small with big output and effective yet simple and reliable. You don't need the remote shut off which I think is $400 extra, unless your missing both your arms. A couple hundred dollars of chemical will do alot of area, I'd say you can do 10-20 acres for at least a couple weeks.You have to get the Permanone which is also sold by Adapco, it's permetherin and has the PBO mixed in already and is extremely affective.

I worry about the fogger spray and how long it stays airborne........what are the effects of it being inhaled? It can't be good for you or your neighbors for that matter.......just some questions....if it does not stay airborne that long it's no big deal......I just don't want to be killing more than the midges and bugs if you know what I mean....thoughts?
 
good point, Dennis! bees, butterflies, small birds....definitely something to check on.
 
Don't know if it will kill bees, buttreflies or small birds but it kill house flies like crazy .
 
We vaccinated and have a misting system. When the one we lost it was a different strain than vaccinated but more imported the nozzles in that pen had clogged and a mud hoe in that pen with clogged nozzles is where the deer got sick. Kill the devil, "The Midge" best chance but stil not perfect.
