If you are giving an atibiotic at birth, What atibiotic along with the dosage?, and what is the primary reason for giving?

I'm thinking of giving .25cc Excede. and the reason is to help prevent pneumonia.

If you don't give an atibiotic at birth, and have a particular reason why you don't, please post this also.

As long as the doe has good colostrum then the fawn shouldn't need an antibiotic unless the environmental conditions the fawn were born in warrant it. But of course there is really no way to know if she does have good colostrum. And if the doe didn't have good colostrum, the fawn should get plasma. Now if the doe doesn't have much of a bag you could give the fawn goat colostrum.

In horses we check the foals blood to see if there has been good passive transfer. I have though about trying the foal test with the fawns and see if it is useful or not.

I do not routinely give ours an antibiotic at birth.

We no longer give shots at birth and have had far better results since doing it!

I feel a pro-active worming program with rotation of wormers is the key for my farm. I just wormed with SafeGaurd and will repeat in 7-10 days. Then will worm all does after all fawns are born.

We also use Aurimyicine Crumbles heavily about every 3 - 4 weeks while fawns are on the moms.

This is ONLY what has worked will for me!

No shots no tags no handling of fawns that's what we're doing this year....

Going to microchip buck fawns thurs year. Had some ear tag infection because of rain we had last year
