Hello! My husband and I have gotten much help from this forum in the past and need your help again! Our fawn is about three weeks old and really didn't have problems with his naval until late last week. I'm going to try and attach a picture, but it's been awhile since I've done this. Hopefully, I can figure it out. In the meantime, we put iodine on the umbilical cord when he was first born, and don't understand what's happened. He also has a bloated stomach...and I'm wondering if the bloating is related to the naval problem, or if it's due to something else. He is very alert (tries to jump up when it's bottle time!)...but sometimes has raspy breathing. We started giving about .25 ccs of LA200 two days ago to fend off infection. We would really appreciate any responses as to...how to treat the naval problem, how to treat the bloating, and how to treat the raspy breathing. Thank you SO much!!!

You can try squirting some tetradure or LA 200 directly on the navel. Several years ago we had some ear tag problems with infection setting in and a couple days of squirting tetradure on them cured every one. You really should consider getting some tetradure due to it's staying power. It is supposed to stay in the system for several days.

Thank you for the reply. I was researching other posts on this topic and tried pencillin...which is helping. The naval looks better and the little guy is has much more zip and zing!! We will look into tetradure. Thank you for posting!!

Our little fawn is still having problems with his naval. I have some questions for any of you who have answers: 1) What dosage of penicillin should we be giving? (I believe my husband is giving one shot a day of 1/10 of a cc, but I'm not 100% sure of the cc amount.) 2) How many days should we be giving it? 3) Can we spray LA 200 on the naval while also giving him penicillin? I wrote out a longer summary of the situation, but lost it when I had to enter my password to post this message...and I'm trying to remember everything I wrote! The infected area is about two inches in diameter...and there is a hard scab in the middle of the circle. The outer circle consists of a milky whitish-yellow substance, similar to pus, but not liquidy. We had injured adult deer before that had this same "stuff" ooze out of their wounds for several months before finally clearing up. Not sure if our little guy will be OK. This morning, I noticed a terrible smell coming from the area. Last week, we gave him a shot of penicillin, once a day, for four days, but cut back to every other day since then, because we're not sure how long we should give it. He is very perky, has an appetite and is going to the bathroom fine. In addition to the penicillin, we were using Neosporin (last week), but it just didn't seem to help. We're still giving the pencillin shots, every other day, and just sprayed LA 200 on and around the area. But, we're nervous about having both antibiotics in his system at the same time. We've never had this problem before. We can't afford tetradure, right now. We don't want to loose him, but don't know what else to do.

I would put some betadine solution (full strength) on the infected area. It will turn him orange, but it will help sterilize the infected area. Do this twice everyday for about 6 days and see if it improves. Give him the penacillin but give him about 2cc every other day for 3 treatments. I don't think 1/10cc is near enough, it needs a stronger dose. With this stronger dose of Pen. he will need some probiotics either in his bottle or strait in his mouth every day that he gets penacillin.

Good Luck !!

Im not sure if I did the right thing, but it seemed to work. Last night I was giving shots in our fawn stand, and after the one was done I noticed some puss left where the navel would be. So, I sat him back up and sure enough, it was infected. I squeezed as much out as I could, and cleaned it as good as I could. I put some antiseptic in the whole, and then packed it with bag balm. Then, I shot 1/2 cc of penicillin right into the side of the infection and

1cc Nuflor under the skin. Today it is all scabbed over and all the swelling is gone. Seems like it worked.

Thank you for your responses! We are in the process of giving him the increased dose of penicillin as well as the betadine!! He has already improved!! I appreciate you taking the time to respond so quickly. I hate to think what could have happened to him without your expertise!!

see if the mass will go back into the abdomen carefully checking for possible hernia.. If not, take temp, abscesses will create temps over 102.. If not hernia, insert a 16 Guage needle and see if white-yellow material comes out after sterile scrubbing the area. If abscess, make an X incision in mass and open it up to clean out all pus, flush and coat with strong tincture iodine. Rarely do we need to use tetradure after opening the abscess, works 90% of the time.. Good luck, God bless!!
