I have a 5 week old fawn that just stopped eating yesterday evening. This is her third feeding that she hasnt drank. She comes up to the bottle liks the nipple and holds it in her mouth then just walks away. She looks good and still moves around fine but just wont drink. They have calf mana and lots of grass to eat idk if maybe she has been eating alot of grass and pellets or whats up. Any one ever have them just stop drinking? Up untill yesterday evening she was one of my better eaters. If you have any input I would appriciate it. Thanks

Jared,

I have also had this happen to a couple fawns about that age last fawning season. They just stopped eating milk and switched to a full diet on their own. I guess they just weaned themselves.

I also had a doe fawn this year stop eating for a couple days and then she started drinking milk again. I don't know why. She wasn't sick.

So my advice would be to just keep an eye on her and make sure she is not sick.

Jared,

I would just keep an eye on her. Continue to offer her the bottle each feeding. I would get some probiotics in her if possible, just in case.

Have you stimulated her to poop? try that, if she is pooping, then all is well.

I have a fawn about the same age as yours. She has always been my best eater ( 10 ounces 4 times a day) then a couple days ago she just started eating half her bottle. I have tried to pay attention if she is chewing her cud or not. My wife and I both suspect that she is, but when we approach she stops and comes to see us. We have seen her eating grain and eating the leaves that we offer her. Perhaps your fawn is similar to ours, just being independent.

Just as an up date the fawn has ate the last 3 feedings. IDK she must not have been hungry I guess.

In this heat be real careful of dehydration. Also with the hot days and cooler night the dew on the grass has been real heavy. The first sign of not eating I hit them with C/D antitoxin. Colostridium is really strong right now. I have had a few with it, and caught them fast and stopped it before it could become a problem. If poop is OK, and they look fine, my first reaction is a belly ache. That is the first sign of closstridium in a 4-7 week old fawn at our farm. Wet grass and heat can ferment a fawns stomach and upset the rumen real easy. I would give 3 cc Penicillin sub Q, 10 cc C/D antitoxin sub Q and some electrolytes either by tubing or 120 cc of lactated ringer under the skin. None of the above mentioned will do any harm, if anything it can only help. Can you get a temp? Do you see any wobbling when she walks. Are here sides really sucked in? Is she grinding her teeth?

sometiimes they colic too.. malachon drops (simethicone) for infants at 1 dropper full prior to bottle works good sometimes.. helps rid the gas and comforts their belly and they will likely drink after about 5 min after treatment.. good luck, God bless

Sometimes they an get a sore or abcess in their mouth as well and this will keep them from eating......I found this out the hard way one year.......by the time I found out why the fawn was not eating it was to late to turn things around.......good luck Jared....sounds like the fawn is eating for you again and things are ok.......good to hear that!

a DVM once advised me that a shot of BoSE will do wonders for young deer fighting illness or whose appetites are weakened for some reason. In my case, it was due to a full fractured tibia in a doe fawn. I should get some for myself...
