I have a 3 month old bottle-raised fawn that has been acting painful the last 2 days. I thought it was her back and that maybe she got kicked by one of the other deer as we just released her and another doe fawn in with the big deer about a week ago. Today I got to check her over pretty well with aid of a bottle and found no obvious injuries or swelling, but her belly is very firm and seems painful to touch. It is not bloated out to the sides, it is normal size but from her ribs all the way back to between her legs is hard. She pooped and it was a large amount and solid, and ate 10 oz bottle. Have also seen her eating alfalfa and grain. She acts fine except for seeming to be in pain with walking. She hunches up a bit in the middle and drops her back end lower. Any ideas? I'm don't have any idea what would be doing this. So far all I have done is put some baking soda in her bottle. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I just lost a fawn that did the same thing. It had a twisted bowel.

I took it off solid food, kept it on a bottle, mineral oil in the bottle and mineral oil enema. He pooped good, but died four days after symptoms appeared.

the stomach was very slightly bloated looking, more to the sides than a "normal" bloat that is rounded to the top sides. Stomach felt very firm, like 3/4 of a banana in there, the firm part got larger over two days.

You know it was by far the prettiest marked fawn I've ever had......

Make sure she is going pee!!! I had one that had the same problem and come to find out our water is hard and crystalized. The crystals plugged her uretha and she could not pee!!

There was no fix at the time.We lost a bunch before we found out what the problem was.We fixed our water problem and away went the fawn problem.

I had the same problem at a previous location. We lost one fawn, had major problems with another one, then figgered it out on the third when we changed to bottled water for his formula bottle. We had our city water checked and it was way off the charts. I quit drinking it or feeding it to any animals. No more problems.

Next time you give her a bottle try to stimulate urine to see if she can. I would get her away from any solid food, put her on water for 24 hours & see what comes out of her.
