New to the site, I hope I'm doing this right...

What is everyone doing for fawns this year. We used a pneumonia vaccine last year and it didn't help at all. Trying to come up with a game plan seeing how it is almost here.

We use a pneumonia and a E-coli vaccine out here in Montana and it has done wonders for us. My guess is the vaccine just didn't cover the pneumonia you had on your ranch. If this is a constant problem for you I would collect samples and have New Port Lab make a vaccine that will cover your specific pneumonia. Or maybe collect samples and have the place you bought the vaccine add it to their vaccine so it covers more pneumonia germs. Just a thought.

Thanks for the input. Several people around our area in Alabama aren't giving any vaccinations. They say they have had pretty good luck so far

Honestly, just leave them with their mothers! In 5 years I've lost 0 fawns that I've left alone and with the doe. The only ones I ever have lost are bottle-fed fawns. So I myself am trying to avoid bottle-feeding as much as possible

For many many years we bottle fed almost every doe fawn. I am a BIG believer in tame herds. However I think if half as much time spent bottle feeding was spent just walking the pens and talking to the deer, the herd would be tame enough and we would save money and effort. That said, if you have big pens and tall grass forget what I just said. You will then need to bottle feed.
For whatever my 25 years of experience is worth.

Thank you all. I spend the better part of my whole day in the pens. We do not bottle feed any of our fawns unless the mother dies. This year we have talked about just tagging the fawns and giving them a little shot of wormer and sending them on their way.

For many years we gave new borns Ivormect Plus. Vets always said that at that age it wasn't really doing any good. What we did notice is that the spot of the sub Q injection the hair would forever grow weird. Shorter hair strands and discoloration as well. Turns out what was happening was the drug caused a burn of sorts and thus permanent damage if not given deep enough below the thin skin of a fawn. We stopped giving the wormer to new borns and never had any issues after that. Deworming the mothers is just as effective through the milk the fawns drink off mom.

We're in our 2nd year had 17 fawns born and have only 6 left now we had a necropsy done on one and it came back bronchial pneumonia and he still had milk in his stomach.we gave the ones left draxin that was 8 days ago so far so good any ideas what to do for next year also in Alabama

Pneumonia hit our fawns hard last year too. We started giving Nuflor and it worked for a while. We finally figured out to alternate between Nuflor and Draxxin. Getting different medicines in them quickly seemed to help us.
