Hello everybody. Hope the fawning season is going great for everybody. Were just about ready to have the first fawns ever on the farm, I think? We have a 2 year old that will be having her first fawn. Today we see a bag about the size of a baseball maybe a softball. And just wondering how close we are. Wow, this is getting exciting.

I have heard within a couple days when they bag up although they don't necessarily have to bag up before they fawn. Finding the first fawn is the coolest. So far all 3 of my first-time 2 year olds have had singles. Don't know the size of your pen but be sure to check for a possible twin once you find one. They are amazingly hard to find sometimes.

Thanks for all the responses. She fawned todayabout 4. I believe it was a single. Didn't want to get to close right away. Will find out tomorrow. Super exciting!

Well went to take a look this morning and she had twins. How much giddy up do they usually have at about16 hours old? They were up walking with momma this morning and when they bedded udown I went to get a closer look. Not much movement. he lifted his head a little. Its 50 now and damp from the dew. Anything I should worry about or any pointers would be great. Also can I tag at any time? What can I expect from that? Thanks again.

You can now tag at any time. The only thing we wait on is to let the mother clean them off then we give shots and tag. Movemant is all different we have had day olds that get up and high tail it out of there or we have had them lay curled up in a ball for 2 weeks not moving from you at all. You will probably think the mother has rejected them due to the fact that she will lay them down anywhere in the pen and not have any contact with them for hours at a time but it is completely normal. She will even try and lead you in the wrong direction when you are looking for the babies. If they were up with momma this morning i'm sure she will be a good momma and take care of everything for you. Have fun watching and enjoying them they grow up fast.

Chris,

We normally tag and vaccinate within the first four hours. Some vaccinations have to be done in the first few hours to be effective. As long as the doe has both fawns dried they are ready to tag. The only time we had trouble with a mother not accepting them after tagging was just before dark and a heavy rain. We tagged too soon, the afterbirth wasn't all out yet. The doe ran off and never did accept the one fawn. Like Jonathan said all fawns are different, but I wouldn't be concerned about lethargic fawns until at least a weak. Not sure where you are from, but in Ohio 50 degrees wouldn't be a concern. We've had fawns in sleet or with frost on the ground. Cold doesn't seem to bother them, wet conditions or mud have always been my problem.
