What,s the pros and cons to them ? Thinking about building one . Was planning on putting a roof over it and on skids to move it . Any other thoughts ?

If you go with a trough feeder the skid is the way to go. Having it mobile to keep deer out of one spot. they have a habit of just eating and poopen wich means mud, possible hoof problems and other health issues. We use troughs here and often enjoy watching all of them line up at it at feed time. So i dont have an oppinion on any other way. Like the skid idea and roof.

It is always a good idea to avoid feeding off the ground, it is easier avoid moldy feed and e-coli (from deer walking and defecating on feed placed on the ground) If your going to make your own trough, I would highly recommed you put a roof on it, you will waste less feed when you have a roof over it and its pouring rain all day long.

That was the plan , 55 gallon drum cut , build a frame up off the ground with skids and a roof .

with my cut in half drums all I do to stabilize them is screw a 12'' x 24'' piece of 3/4'' plywood on each end

The feeders with roofs on them are fine for the does, but I'm wondering if the sides cause problems with bucks during velvet time --- something or another buck scares them and they bang into the side of the feeder. Think this year I will just use feed bunks on the bucks

bet it gets full of snow! plwood helps , bigger feeder hjelps, for doubt i take vacation!on blowin snow birds helps, on trough. but it helps i always see feathers. covered plus few gophers. he cruises, maybe thatss why he turned from siamise to a black.not fixed? only few works, on snakes, and the blowin rain oh most helps the blowin snow! and rain holds 200lpb,only my just okie opinion from the south, DC

what keeps the grain /pellets dry is feeding every day and half, twice a day if it looks like rain

.....raining...go eat grass

Dc you would of loved it here the other day -33 ,wind 55 MPH. if had to walk 1/2 a mile in a jacket and jeans probably would not make it
