feeding fawns

There seems to be a lot of different ways to bottle feed. 5 years ago I fed two orphaned doe fawns using canned goat's milk cut 50% with water. from two days old to 3 months, that's all they got. Last year I fed zoologic. Great results, but very expensive! I want to know more about using red cap milk, mixed with save a kid, and probiotics. Any one who can lend info. All three of these ingredients are easily obtainable here in FL. Please elaborate any information on worming fawns as well. All is appreciated to this rookie!

I was wondering what people thought of pulling the fawn at 15hrs. old and giving it a shot of clostrdium (sp)? I know some people do this but i wanted a second opinion on this. Let me know thanks.

They say after the first 12 hours the fawns have recieved the majority of the colostrum that they are going to get.....how they know this is a mystery to me......You will be ok pulling your fawns that early.....I just make sure if I do that ..that I mix colostrum in with their milk for a few days..........as for the red cap milk......this is what i use and have had great results.....the only thing is you need to mix in the probiotics as that stuff is all taken out during the pasturization process.......but as far as the milk fat and all the cream and good stuff that make th fawns grow it is all still in the red cap milk none of this stuff is seperated....a lot of people believe that all the good stuff is taken out during pasturization and that is simply not the case....a friend of mine knows a very large dairy farmer who processes his own milk and he explained how it all works.........you can mix some milk replacer in with the red cap but after hearing what that dairy farmer said i beleive it is over kill and a waste of money..........like I said though you do need to put in the probiotics.

Dennis your body sounds like pretty smart guy i heard the same thing. I have taken a lot of fawns off after 12 hours all were fine how ever i like to wait 24 hours at least. Probly better to leave on for a couple of days but seem to be harder to start on bottle.

My buddy is a pretty nice guy....I don't know if i would go as far as saying he is a smart guy.........I pretty much have taught him everything he knows........he has a long ways to go ......but i will keep working on him and get him up to speed!!!

How much probiotics do you need to put in if you are going to only use the red cap milk? Is the Target Fawn Past enough?

You can't overdo probiotics. I use some in every bottle the first few weeks, then in at least 2 bottles a day the rest of the time until weaned. I use the Special Blend 12.

Dennis - You will need about 21 jars. It comes 8 jars/case. A case is $1120, and will give you about 2000 doses. 30 fawns x 90 days x 2 times a day is 5400 doses. I have been feeding Fastrack probiotics for the last 3 years. I absolutely love it on my bottle fed fawns. No scours or digestive problems and they usually start pelleting by 2 weeks of age. Also a little easier on the pocket book. For 30 fawns you would need 6 cans at a cost of $201.65 plus shipping.

Gaylen, what type of fastrack products do you use and what type of animal seeing they don't have deer products.

Ray Hansen, Cervid Health Products, also has some great probiotic stuff for fawns. Just a 1/4 tsp. in the bottles. Great guy to work with - ships it fast. Not sure about price. He is in WI - 715.859.2938 - wealth of knowledge.

I use the exotic fastrack. The water dispersible for the bottle babies and the regular microbial pack for the ones that are weaned and on up.
