I am new to this sight it looks to have a wealth of knowledge. My brother and I are getting 5 or so does this fall from a Amish family in NE Ohio to do as a hobby and hopefully raise some nice typical shooter bucks. We are starting out with a single 100 x 400 pen to get us started. I am wondering if the 2096-6" spacing is good enough for fawns or go to the much more expensive 3" spacing vertical fencing. We do have a coyote problem and was planning on putting electric fencing on the outside to help with this. Any suggestions would be appreciated on type and most economical fence for our needs. The 2096-6 is just about standard in raising deer. Thats what i have and so does alot of others. Fawns will stay in it. for the first 4-5 rows the squares in the fence are 3X6 then the progressively get bigger to 6X6 opening. If you have alot of yotes put one strand of electric fence about 6" off ground just out form the base of the fence to keep them from digging and then put a second strand up about 18"-24" Plan for expansion with 5 doe next spring you will have likely 15 deer in that pen and that will be over crowded by fall.
I have fence and can help you on this. The 6" spacing is ok and is used the most but the 3" is increasing in use due to the spacing issue not only for preditiors but also as the fence gets higher, the spacings get larger and fawns have a tendenancy to stick their heads through and get stuck nd they can choke and die. They can also pull the tags from their ears if they get their heads through the fence. Give me a call and we can chat, thanks.
We have had problems with the fawns sticking their heads through the 6' squares so we strech some shade cloth around the area where the does and fawns are. It has saved some torn ears for us. Rick
