Firming Fawns Poop

I have three fawns that I'[m bottle raising this year. For the first month I kept them inside the shop, and I have a feeling they didn't get introduced to the good bacteria and germs they should have been introduced to with having them outside. Is that possible? and if it is any advise on how to build up their immune system?

Due to this I have one that I can't seem to keep her poop firm. I've tried straight electrolytes, Pepto Bismol, pumpkin in the bottle and keeping fresh dirt in the pen. She doesn't act sick though, she's up running around with my other two fawns, eats 7 oz every feeding. Does anyone have any other ideas for me try that maybe I'm missing?

Thanks!

Chey,

This is my exact problem with one fawn.  Your story is my story.  She is doing fantastic running around, happy, but I am raising her inside my house as I have no choice until she is a bit bigger.  Vet said to keep her in until she can eat on her own because I live in the middle of a city where 200 or so deer are land locked in by highways.  So, I am doing all I can to care for them myself.

I even tried 5 pellets of dewormer which helped with her appetite, but her poop is still runny and smells worse than dogs.  I hope someone can help you and I will keep an eye on this post.

Check out another post I am apart of about bottle feeding fawns

Some times its just the way they are...I have a couple right now that are solid for 2 feedings, loose, and then solid again. Sometimes its heat or stress. If they are still eating that's the best thing. Can also be caused by consumption of grasses, or any plant material for that matter. Ryan

tractor supply probiotic in the tube, or get ahold of henry martin, I think he sells probiotic.

@Ryan: I keep alfalfa in the pen with them should I pull it out?

@Scott: thank you, I'll pick some up right now.

May be protein scours but hard to say! If you can take a sample to your vet have them run a fecal float or bacterial analysis and then you know for sure!

I have a 3 week old fawn with the same problem.  Yesterday was her first full day on Ultrapasterized Goats Milk straight from the carton and warmed in bottle.  The difference was almost immediate.  This morning she made pellets.  Her energy level is high, her color is amazing.  I can't believe the change in such a short period of time.

The milk was from the grocery store and not very expensive.  I suppose it might be for multiple fawns.  It works for me as I just rescue and rehab here in the city.

I know when I was a baby, my mother had to give me goats milk because I could not handle formula.  I can only assume deer are the same.  Some fawns have a more sensitive tummy.

Try changing that one fawn to a goats milk easy on the tummy and see if it helps.  It helped my little one.

Good luck!

@ Chey........How did the goats milk work?

My little Charlie is doing fantastic.  She is eating like crazy and on a normal schedule.  She is making perfect pellets now!

I think some tummies just can't handle normal milk.  In humans and animals.  I was raised on Goats Milk too.  So says my mother!  lol

We've been using dannon plain yougurt in the fawns bottles the last two years.

1 tablespoon per bottle it will firm their stool in a day or two.
