Man, the flies are God awful this year! What to do. I spray the herd and enclosures with a permethrin mix and try to Swat some of the tamer doe's. But this year I can't keep up. Do you guys add anything to your feed (garlic powder) or is there a great solution to my problem that I'm just not aware of????

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

We have discussed this several times on our TV show. We use Victor fly traps. They are large jars that you put some fly bait in and when the flies crawl in they can't get out. You can get them at your local farm supply store or through Jeffers supply. Through Jeffers they show the smaller jars, but when you select it you can then choose the gallon jars, which is what we use. You would not believe the number of flies you will catch in those things! Thousands! Then you can empty them and refill. We hang them on the outside of the pens. We put out about one per pen, but if they fill up in 10 days or so you should put out more. They won't eliminate flies, but they really cut down on them. Nothing makes you feel better than seeing a jar full of flies you've just eliminated!

I agree with Wild Rivers. We have tried about everything to cut down on the number of flies - Garlic in feed, spray, fly predators, and fly traps. We like the traps the best, BUT nothing we have tried will eliminate them completely for us. We just feel like we get the best results for the money with the traps.

I was curious to folks that fog there pens or have misting/spray systems what kind of concentrate you use and how you mix it for best results?

We use the fly traps and 3.5lbs of garlic powder per half ton in the feed. The garlic really works wonders, but it takes a good two weeks until we really start seeing a difference once we start feeding it. It's been the single best thing we've done for pest control. We almost never see any ticks either. We actually see more on our dogs than on the deer.

Josh in my fogger I use 10% permetherin and mix it 10oz to 25 gallons. Any questions give me a call.

Deer Dee. We have used Spalding fly predators for five years with great sucess. Cost about 250.00 a year for five shipments of 25,000 .It was worth the money.Work good if there are no other farms nearby. Mackinac Island started them a couple years ago.

I make my own traps from clear plastic pretzel containers a gallon and a half or so. Any clear plastic container with a screw on lid will work.

Drill several 1/4 inch holes in the lid and run a wire through the sides to hang it.

Bait it with a bleugill or some fish scraps, with just enough water to cover the fish.

They fill up in a few weeks, dump em out n rebait.

Dumped my 6 traps last night, and just about filled a 5 gal bucket with flies.

It is a little disgusting, but its free and it works great.

Has anyone tried Malathion to knock the smaller biting and sucking flies? We use the large jar traps and have had great success with the larger flies. The smaller biting and sucking flies still drive the animals crazy. My elk ran all day the other day in 90 degree heat, trying to stay away from the flies. could barely see the flies till I got up close and found a swarm hanging near the back end of each animal.

The user information for Malathion says to remove the animal from the area while spraying, but that is the only limitation.

I agree Rowe, the large jar traps work fine on the ''big flies'', but they don't seem to load up with the smaller biting flies, which are the flies that are the problem for the deer. The big flies aren't the problem...they don't bite!

That's true, they don't get rid of the deer flies. In the open areas where we have our pens those type of flies don't seem to be as big a problem. The big flies are the ones that will be all over a tear in the velvet, deposit eggs and you then have maggots and an antler infection. They may not bite but they are very pesky and you see the deer constantly trying to get rid of them. With the fly traps we will see a few flies on the deer, without them there are a lot more.

I have tried many fly traps as well and the rescue fly traps work best for me. Clear plastic bag fill em with water and give it a couple of days in the 90 degree heat before they start working but in a week they will be full. I ordered 25 from amazon $3.95 a piece and have used 20 in a months time on 3 acres. work great

I just added garlic to the last batch of feed 3.5lb per 1000lb, will put up fly trap's this week as well. They have not seemed to be all that bad here yet this year.

I have quite a few of the the Big Stinky's lining our perimeter fencing but they dry out so fast....it's hard to keep up. Will the Permetherin hurt the fawns if sprayed in the same enclosure? I think I'll be adding the garlic powder to our next order as a test run. Thanks for all your help guys!!!!

I have a large flock of free roaming Muscovy ducks, They snap up every insect they can find.
