I'm fogging my pens with my tractor mounted sprayer and have been using 10% permethrin in my sprayer. Is thier another product available ?

If so was interested in what was available and thought I would rotate the type of spray chemicals I was using. I also only spray and fog areas the deer congregate and lay aand try to avoid spaying were they browse.

Thanks in advance:)

Wayne,

We use the higher concentrated permethrin (I think it's 38%), and we also mix in Synerpro (knock down agent). We've been using this method in our sprayer for 3 years and it's very effective.

Email me or call if you would like more info.

what about the cheml. that lays on the grass they eat ?

Wayne,

If you are going to spray permethrin, a higher percentage based permethrin would be better. Tengard & other knockoffs have a 36.8% permethrin solution.

Another item that is being sprayed is Sector. Sector costs more, but it a permethrin with a PBO in it that is to enhance the kill factor for any resistance that has built up among insects to other sprays. However, when you go to Sector, you drop back down to 10% permethrin. You can enhance any other higher percent permethring by purchasing the PBO separately & adding it in the mix. This is to increase your kill effectiveness.

Keep in mind, that I believe all of the above you are still killing mostly adult stage insects, midges, flies, etc. The PBO will help kill some larvae & nymph stage insects, but probably not all. There are even more things to add to increase effectiveness of the other stages of the insect cycle as well.

Ping me or give me a call sometime and I would be glad to review what I know. I am working on more info on other preventative solutions as well at this time to try & spread some help to deer farmers interested or in need.

Pyranha 1-10 PX Concentrate has been getting good feedback this year. Its 10% Permethrin and 10% piperonyl butoxide, 64 ounces makes 50-200 gallon. Runs 59.99/64oz Item# 412-50 . Any questions feel free to give me a call. Thanks

There is a lot of misunderstanding & unknowns to many of us deer farmers trying to use permethrin. My chemical supplier says that permethrin mixed with PBO at a mix of 1 part permethrin to 2 parts PBO is the best combination of chemical mix to spray or fog with. The big question is what percentage of permethrin strength is needed to kill the insects, midges, flies etc.

I fog with a 4% permethrin and 8 % PBO mix. I have a neighbor who uses Sector, which is a 1 to 1 permethrin to PBO mix. 10% permethrin to 10% PBO Let's break the Sector mix down. One gallon of sector mixed with one gallon of water reduces the Sector concentration to 5% and now you have 2 gallons of mix. Now mix 2 gallons of water to that 2 gallons of 5% strength and you have 4 gallons of 2.5% strength. Mix that with 4 gallons of water you have 8 gallons of 1.25% permethrin strength. When you keep diluting the mix to get to 128 gallons your strength of permethrin is .078 % permethrin.

There are many chemicals with various names like Sector but they all have the active ingredients, permethrin & PBO. But you have to wonder if .078%, that less than 1/10 of one percent can be real effective against the flies, midgets ect. we are trying to kill.

The problem is that with a misting system we pump hundreds of gallons of water thru it and to get the active ingredient of permethrin up to two, three or four percent it becomes expensive. Permethrin cost about $75 a gallon. PBO is far more expensive, it cost about $150.00 a gallon, yes $150 a gallon. You can do the math and see what it takes to have a mix that has an effective kill percentage. A lot of people are misting but it is a very diluted concentration and is way below 1% of permethrin.

I personally use a ULV fogger much like what you see used in neighborhoods in the back of a truck fogging for Mosquitos. Mine fits on a golf cart or Polaris Ranger. I use about 6 to 8 ounces per acre. Would like to hear other thoughts. Thanks

Wayne, I agree with your accessment because I learned the hard way ( lost deer this spring). It seemed that the enviromental conditions were perfect and we had an epidemic of EHD in April. My misting system just could not deal with the proliferation of midges. Since then I have now realigned my strategy. I bought a fogger and now fogg every 2 weeks with a residual on the neighboring property lines , this acts as a barrier and kill zone. I have doubled my concentration in our misters. I have hung cattlerubs soaked in diesel, vector ban plus and garlic oil.

What chemicals and what amounts do you put in your fogger? My fogger has a 15 gallon tank and can cover 7 acres and I would like to compare what your active ingredient is to what I am using,
