I have a yearling 130-140" that has shed one side of his antlers. Just 2 1/2 years in the deer farming industry and know that wild deer in Kentucky shed Jan.,Feb., & March this seems odd. Is this something that typically happens in farm raised deer.

Thanks

The buck may have an injury of some kind to the opposite side(s) hoof or leg that shed.

Haven't noticed anything wrong with him. But the antler was found laying next to a small tree.

Bucks loosing their antlers early (and now is certainly early), could be a sign of an infection or some other kind of health issue. I would look him over VERY closely and keep a VERY close eye on him. I personally haven't a clue why a buck would lose his antler this early unless he did have a health issue, but maybe someone else does.

Good luck with him!

Did you inspect the base of the antler, and did it shed cleanly? None of our bucks have ever shed this early, although I have seen it in wild deer in central PA a few times.

The only time we've seen bucks shed this early is when they are stressed or unhealthy. Was he used for breeding? Maybe he is stressed out from that - they can get run down and it can lead to early antler shedding. We usually don't see antlers shedding until mid-January at the earliest.

We had a couple of dogs around the pen 5 to 7 days ago one small dog got into his pen. The dogs are now buzzard food. They had them wound tight.

Our deer rifle season opened here in PA last week. Two of the bucks we killed while dragging them out one of there horns came off. One was just a small six and the other was a 10 point about 140 both looked good and had alot of fat on them.
