Help!! Idiot ranch left the gate open.

My greatest fear came true tonight. after putting CIDRs in a pen of deer I tell my ranch hand to go push thm back in there pen. he radios back and tells me he accidentilly left the gate to the open field open and the deer are gone. I freaked out! we already got two back in. never had anything like this happen. any suggestions? will a deer breed with a CIDR in? what if they never comeback, will they be able to breed in the future with CIDRs in? my mind is just racing.....
 
Is your ranch high fence? Where they would still stay in your property? If they left your breeding pens ...you have to notify (Texas Parks And Wildlife)and fill out the escape notification. I would try spotlighting them at night , to dart them or hire a helicopter company to net them during the day.Also notify the Game Warden so he will know you are doing that. As far as them still breeding ....I wouldn't know. Goodluck !!!
 
okay, i've got 9 back in there and still waiting on 1. been a long night :)

All of our does got out last year. What a nightmare...I didn't eat for 2 days for being so upset. After 24 hours, we had all but 2 back in the pen. They all had CIDR's in them. It took 3 weeks to get one of the does back in. The one doe we never got back in. Her picture was taken on a trail cam this fall. Looking right into the camera.



They can breed in the wild with a CIDR in. The doe that we never got back had a CIDR in her. According to our AI vet, they will come in heat after having it in for so long and the buck will push the CIDR in when breeding her. She will then push the CIDR out when having fawns. I found that information amazing. We thought she would die a horrible death from infection.



Mitch is right......PATIENCE!! You will probably have alot of sleepless nights until you get her back, but I think you will get her. She will get hungry and lonely. We got our last one at night. She was in the alley "visiting" and we finally trapped her. Next day, pulled her CIDR, gave her a shot and threw her in with a buck. She had fawns right on time!:D
 
I discovered today one of my gates on the buck pen was left open.:eek: It is a gate I use rarely. A couple of days ago a neighbor helped himself to showing a friend my deer without my prior consent or notification.:mad: I don't know that he left it open but it sure does raise suspicion. The gate was ajar by a few inches for a minimum of two days. :( The positive side is that no deer were lost or displaced so I'm counting blessings. I think it is time to have locks on all gates.

I finally got the last doe back home! just went out to check and there she was :) I can breathe a sigh of relief, these were a pen of my best does so I was really freaking out :) luckily it was a cheap lesson learned . Always check the gates yourself and don't trust the help ;) thanks for the moral support, it helped.



Susan, that's interesting they will still breed with the CIDRs in, that was the first place my mind went :)
 
Here's some good advice. Take a bungi strap and hook it to the gate to make it close automatically. At least the gate won't be wide open if left unlatched.
 
Steve glad to hear you got them back! and yes they will breed with a cidr in a friend of mine sent a doe out to get bred last fall the farm she went to forgot to pull the cidr she went way past her cidr in due date he went out to check her one morning to find her chewing on the cidr and nursing her new fawns!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE WERE SHOCKED to say the least!

Steve that's great news. We installed garage door springs on the gates with stops this should keep this from ever happening.
