we r very new to deer farming, we only have one buck, we had to put him down and clean up an antler that he damaged. He started rubbing, then just stopped, he broke a kicker that was flopping for the last few days....today when we seen flies bothering him and fly eggs...we decided to take him down and fix him up as best as we could....we had great advice from josh at red ridge.....but once he was reversed and up on his feet....he started walking around and feeding ....but his 1 ear just hangs there.....limp, dead, drooping ........any ideas? we watched him lay down , he didnt hit anything? we used bam.

I think you need to observe a couple of days to see if it corrects itself. If it is on the same side as the damaged antler, it may be down because antler removal (even a piece) is very painful and that just may be his reaction to the pain. Did you see any signs of infection in the damaged area? Any puss or maggots under the velvet? You want to rule out any other pathology. But, if that ear was up before the darting and he didn 't fall then it's most likely something that will improve over time. I would keep a very close eye to make sure that you don't see any other signs that infection may have passed into his bloodstream. I do not use BAM so I am unaware of any side effects, you should contact your vet as a precaution.

Early this summer one of our bucks that wasn't tranquilized had a droopy ear. It just flopped around for a couple of days and then he was fine again.

I have had to give a few more antipamazole because recommended dosage for that deer was not enough. Had 2 womb brothers do the same thing. is he still drowsy?

the newer BAM II has more reversal from that same problem...sometimes they need a little extra reversal. Not often but it happens.

Sound advice, esp. do not rule out any other pathological vectors. Even a mycoplasma, coincidental with the injury and subsequent treatment, remains a distant, but viable possibility. I certainly concur with contacting your vet...it's cheap insurance.

Thank you all for responding....no the ear was not like that before we tranqualized him....he didn't hit anything when he fell... he did have fly eggs and maggots in the dead velvet that was hanging....we cut it back to healthy velvet, cleaned out the maggots with screw worm, loaded him up with blu kote and swat.....gave him draxxin, banamine, vitvia b, and wormer....i u used 2 cc bam to take him down and 4 cc. atipamezol and 1 cc. Naltrexone to reverse....but some of the "a" leaked back out when I pulled the needle out.....he didnt seem drowsy...he was eating clover within 20 30 minutes....i think iI answered everyones questions....we did learn tonite.....he ddidn't damage the antler when rubbing, he was stuck in the fence.....we found the bent fence, broken wires, cleared gground, and blood splattered shade cloth.....
