Help with sick Doe

I have a 5 year old doe who had a fawn last week which is about 30 days earlier than normal. The fawn looked fine and didn't look premature. Three days post birth, the doe started drooling and when she tried to eat the dobbins treats she would spit them out.

We gave her dex, draxxin and baytril. The next day she continues to drool, but less than day before. She started shaking her head. We gave her another dose of dex.

We are now on day 4. This morning we found the fawn dead. We gave her another round of dex, draxxen, and baytril.

She continues to look the same with less drool. She still shakes her head, loosing weight, and stays away from the other does in the pen.

Anyone have any ideas or recomendations.

Could it possibly be EHD this early for you in Texas?

I haven't heard of EHD this early for anyone down here but I can't think of anything else it could be which is why I am reaching out to this group. I am treating it like EHD. I had EHD run through last year but it only affected my fawns and this doe was fine.

She may have retained a fawn. I'd get her checked ASAP!!!

This is just a stab in the dark here based on what I am hearing from you and from what past experience has shown me. This may well be way off base.

The drooling could be because of something irritating inside her mouth. Her shaking her head could also be from that.

The fawn might have died from drinking her milk after being treated with the drugs, or simply she stopped caring for the fawn because she is sick. Or because it came so early.

Once in the past a simple husk from a corn cob was lodged in the mouth of a doe. It was between the tongue and the lower inside jaw. It caused enough irritation that the tongue swelled, she drooled and stopped eating because it hurt so much.

I have also heard of an infected tooth causing excessive drooling. However I don't think she would be as negatively effected as what you describe.

Had a doe that did the exact thing 2 yrs ago. Got so bad and skinny that we could give IV while she layed there. Tried everything under the sun and my wifes a vet. She kept her alive for 2 weeks. There is a reason she had the fawn early, but sounds exactly like the doe we had.

I looked (not felt) and didn't see any kind of a lump or any type of an abscess on her mouth or neck.

Roger's post made me think of another symptom that may serve as a clue. She appears to be straining when she poops but then when she does it is normal round pellets.

We darted the doe and took these pictures. I have never seen anything like this. I don't think its EHD. You can see from the pictures that her tongue has a brown patch and the smell was terrible. It is almost like she bit thru her tongue except that the part that looks bad in about 3 inches from the tip.

I coated her tongue heavy with penicillin.

This morning we watched her very closely and it looks as if she has no control of the tip of her tongue. With no tongue she had a very difficult time getting protein from the free choice feeder.

Anyone else every seen this before?? Any ideas on what to do? Do tongues grow back?
