Hi Guys:

Does anyone know if High Roller was a product of Sundance being bred back to his Mother? I came across this pedigree on Whitetail Quest and it shows a "Yellow #4" as Sundance's Mother and also as High Roller's Mother. Are these two different "Yellow #4's" or is it a mother to son matchup?

Has anyone purposefully bred mother to son?

As always, thank you!

Thank You Randy.

I wanted to add that the reason I asked was because I previously posted a thread regarding "line breeding" and "in breeding" and in that thread someone mentioned that this was a mother son matchup. When I looked at the pedigree I wasn't sure.

This is an issue for me because my best buck and best doe happen to be mother and son. My buck will be placed in his mother's pen to breed because that is where my best producing doe are. In order to avoid him breeding back to his mother I would have to dart and move her to another pen. The problem is first, I don't want to dart my best doe in fear that something can go wrong and second, she has always lived in and been the dominant doe in the pen she is in now. I don't want to cause her any stress from moving her.

Personally, I am very hesitant on breeding this way, but as you can see, I think I have some very legitimate concerns. One option is to AI her, leave her in the pen and see what happens with the hope that the AI takes therefore eliminating her taking to her son.

Thanks Again,

Daniel Zola

I was in a similar situation as you last year and bred a son to his mother. This spring she had twins. The buck fawn was born without a rectum and and was having problems breathing, He died the about 15 hours later. The doe fawn lived and is healthy but she is the smallest fawn that I have and shes older than the rest. I myself will never do this again.

Daniel,

I would not breed son and mother on purpose even though it has worked for a couple of folks whether by accident or on purpose. It is just to tight I think.

That said I actually have a doe of breeding age this year who is the product of a former buck of mine called Max Thrust (Now owned by Adam Rowland from MN) breeding his own mother.

That year she missed to the A/I and he was the cleanup buck for her. I kept the fawn because she was decent size and showed no ill affects. However had she shown ANY ill affects the best course of action would have been to COMPLETELY remove her from the gene pool. Not just my own breeding program by selling her, but instead by just putting her in the freezer. An offspring from line breeding with any ill affects should NEVER be sold to anyone as breeding stock.

Those are some of the "hard choices" a line breeder has to make sometimes.

Now that this doe is healthy and of breeding age and not showing any issues she will be breeding to either Updraft or Downdraft who as some know from looking at their pedigree is the product of line breeding. I look forward to crossing this doe with one of those boys since it could result in a "pop" producing a special son.

Not that I know jack (*&& about any of this stuff. It is just my two cents, for free.

Thank you very much. I feel there are too many potential risks and will not be breeding this matchup. The problem is that I must now decide how to breed her pen. As I said earlier, all of my best producing doe are in that same pen. If she stays....then I have to put a different buck (not my best buck) in and move the other doe and my best buck into another pen, or, in the alternative (and simplest option), I can move her to another pen and breed her pen the way I planned....all my best doe to my best buck. I fear losing her during the moving process. What are your thoughts?

Thanks,

p.s. How does Updraft look now that he is done growing?
