 I have never been just about myself and I appreciate success as much as the next guy, With that said, I just have a quick note to post.

My son and I have just finished our first year of deer farming

and have been taken advantage of more times than i can count on my fingers

and i still have ten :)

I have always been fasinated with Whitetail deer and want to raise the type of deer i like to look at.

It really seems like there are far too many crooks that take advantage of the beginners in the field, and even though we have made many good friends, I have enough chapters in our first years documentary to write a book, so maybe thats what I will do.

Sorry to hear you had so many bad experiences. Like we've said before, deer farming is the same as any other business, some reputable folks and some that aren't. We know several really great deer farmers in Iowa - hope you connect with them along the way.

Welcome to the club mike. It's been said before that this crap has to stop. I know some of what you are going through as the deer world is a small place. If some of the rip off's happened on the street that happen in the deer biz, people would have broken leg's or who know's what!!! It is a shame that there are some that operate this way but most do not!!

Everyone has to answer for his or her actions in the long run.....those who treat others in a bad way will pay for their wrong doings........I feel sorry for them actually because they have not a clue what is in store for them........I hope they learn to change.......it is as simple as respecting one another....treat others how you would want to be treated.....but unfortunately we live in a different world now with different values and it stinks!!

Mike, Have you had any luck talking with any of those involved ? Have they tried to contact you ? I was just wondering if you are getting anywhere or if your still getting jerkrd around ?

It is sad to say that some people only think of what is best for themselves and whatever makes them look good. The sad thing is some of the ones that others look up to are the very ones that are cheaters and liars. Then if you say something or expose that person all of a sudden you become the bad guy. No matter how much good a person does it in know way gives them the right to take advantage of someone. The way I see it is a deal is a deal and a person is only as good as his word and if his word is no good well you get the point.

If someone tells you that you will make good money from buying there deer, they are probably lying.

I was at an auction in March a couple years back in Indiana, as I was passing by two men in the lobby, I could not help but nottice the one man was bitching at the other, but in a light tone. About 30 minutes later, the man that was taking the bitching was bidding on the other mans deer, he bid it up to $47,500. What is anyones opinion of that?

The first guy was probably pissed that the second guy didn't run his deer up high enough at the last sale. Guy number two more than made up for his screw up pushing 50 grand for the next sale.

Yeah there are a lot of games played this is for certain. It will never change.....you need to do your homework and know what deer are worth......a deer is only worth what your willing to pay for it......yes some new people get into the business and get taken advantage of and that stinks......personally, I could never live with myself if I knew I was being dishonest and trying to scam people into thinking my deer are worth more.....I want my animals to speak for themselves....and my customers to know I am honest and true to my word always! But that's me.....some others operate in a different light I guess!

Mike said it, the deer farming industry is a small community and eventually things will come back to those who are less than honest. They may get one over on a few people but sooner or later they wont be able to do any business. In the long run honesty is the best policy and a good way to weed out the jerks is to be honest with other about those who are dishonest.

I made a statement on an earlier thread regarding a particular transaction that I was not happy about.

In summary, an AI doe that didn't take or backup . That farmer read my post. Now I guess maybe I was impatient with his time frame on taking care of the matter. However he made up for lost time if you will, above and beyond. I visited with him at his farm and he has great love for his animals. It was a good visit and I hope we can stay friends for life. I never said his name nor his farm, as I respect a person till its obvious they don't respect me- Jason

Jason,Glad everything worked out well for you.Sometimes it can be a misunderstanding on one's part and other time's it could be that someone see's that a dollar could be saved.Either way sometimes when things go public word get's back to those involved and then thing's get taken care of fast. Don't do the crime and there would be no problem's. In the relm of thing's the deer world is a small group of people and there should never even be a post of this nature.

Hello Mike, Just wondering did you get that Wesson/Green 44 buck home? how is he doing. I realy thought I should have talked to you about breeding a few does to him this fall, maybe next year. fred

Is that the one in the typical mag called RJ. If so that is one nice buck you have advertised there.

I raised RJ here on one of Walk Brothers farms, born from an Amos doe that was purchased from Lester Beechy. Yes, we have a little A-Team here in central PA Fred :). RJ's unofficial score was 259 and he was beautiful for what he was .Sadly, we lost him during TB testing this year and we never got to move him to Iowa for Mike.

Does anybody have any suggestions for how to deal with a deer that aspirates when they are down? Seems like when it happens I end up losing half of them. RJ was out for about 35 minutes for semen collection and testing. During the last minutes of his sleep I smelled gut. He was not noticeably bloated or anything that looked concerning. He was put back in his recovery pen and reversed as normal. I stayed away from him for about 24 hours and then found him dead the next day. Autopsy results have his lungs full of stomach contents. We have darted thousands of deer over 20 years and have not found a good way to stop this from happening. It has not been a big problem but when it happens sometimes we end up losing them. This year we had 3 deer aspirate while sleeping and lost 2 of them. This was out of about 400 deer put out this fall. I realize that preventing this by proper handling is obviously the best angle but when it happens what do you guys do?

Anyway, I will bring RJ’s antlers to some of the winter sales for anyone interested in checking him out. I have 2 straws of semen that I will be selling from him if anyone is interested. I only got a few straws of semen when we collected so this is all I will be selling from him.

You might already do what I'm about to suggest/recommend, but it's certainly important enough to NOT assume you do.

Whenever we tranq a deer, we fast them for one day prior. We also ALWAYS keep their head and neck elevated from the rest of the body, and also just generally keep the bottom half of their body lower than their upper half. If the ground contours don't accommodate correct body position, we adjust it with slices of straw or hay, and use the same to keep the head and neck positioned properly higher than everything else.

We never role them on their back to get them on a stretcher. We instead slide them on and move their back to the edge of the stretcher so that when we pick them up they are positioned sternally. As we walk with the deer on the stretcher, the people in front where the deer's head is located keep their hands high as possible and those in back keep their hands low as possible, hence accomplishing the head and neck above the rest of the deer's body.

This is another reason that I argue it is best to reverse RIGHT away without delay. Some say wait for an half hour to an hour or more, but all this time one is waiting you are risking and increasing your chances for aspirated pneumonia by extending the ''danger zone'' through the ''wait''.

Sorry for your loss. None of those losses are easy. We gotta remember one thing Russ...no matter whether our deer live or die, Jesus still sits on the throne, and ''not even a sparrow falls to the ground dead apart from His will.'' Hope Ive helped you Russ. If not, maybe someone else!

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!!

Very good advice Mark. Not feeding for a day really cuts back on the gasses that cause bloat. Russ, How much for a straw might be interested in one. I really like that Amos line on the bottom.

Mark,Good advice indeed...........We follow the same guidelines here and have had very good results. No feed 24 hours before darting (no emergency darting) and reverse immediately after our work is done.......2 minuets later or 55 when where done the nap is over! Virgil, many are starting to notice that Amos line is really working...........Russ, Did you get a good collection on RJ and just keeping it all to your selves ? lol
