Here's a question i cant find anywhere lol. We have noticed over the past few days our newest yearling doe we purchased a few months ago has horns. I know this is actually quite common BUT what i don't know is do they produce? I'm guessing it a genetic disorder. Can they still produce the big head gear bucks? does anyone out there have first hand experience with what i'm asking? trying to figure out my breeding now and i don't want to put a straw of my top end stuff in a doe that can't get it done for me

Thanks guys,

Rick

A neighboring farm has actually had 2 horned does. I know they both were good producers. I think one of them even had a 200" yearling. I believe both does where out of the brother to our buck, Undertaker. It will be really strange if he passes the traits on, but if he does, I will be keeping the does for a while. Hope this helps some and hoping you have similar results.

As a general rule the doe with horns that shed velvet are sterile and the ones that keep their velvet on will usually fawn but later in life may start shedding velvet and become sterile. I would stick with pasture breeding her.

Thanks Brad and Jonathon. Sounds like i have a tough choice to make. I bought her for a specific purpose so i guess i should delay a yr until i KNOW what she's gonna do. I'm not really in the market for any pet deer

Rick, I have a doe who has one little velvet antler about an inch long every year. I will try and take a pic of her 2 year old buck fawn tonight, I assure you it does not hurt her genetically!!! Mine was buck bred and has bred right on time every year.

I have a antlered doe. Fawns every year. She has a 300+ inch womb brother. She is a 2006 model girl and still going.

Does she keep her velvet on?

I researched this several years ago when I had a 6 point doe on the farm. I would like to know if anyone has a doe that rubs off velvet that still fawns?

She maintains velvet year round

The two I was talking about kept their velvet on. Good topic, interested to see some more input.

I have one that grows about a 6-8 inch spike. has now for 4 years. always gives me twins and 3/4 years twin buck fawns. She is out of nothing, just random pen stock with no names to it at all. but still seems to produce decent shooter bucks. Ive kept her because she gives me huge fawns and is a great mother (she'll feed 4-5 fawns even if there not hers)..  she has always kept her velvet

My Pa Geronimo doe grows an antler of some shape or form for the last five years or so.. I can't remember her ever missing AI and produces like crazy!! She is Mossy Oak's mother and has a big yearling this year called Jumbo Jet !!!!

She sheds her horn every year but does not shed velvet?

We currently have three horned does. Two of which grow spikes or forks and produce fawns yearly for 3+ years. The third I believe is a hermaphrodite, she grows a 10 point rack and shed velvet. This was its first year to fawn and has yet to and does not look bred. The antlers once velvet was shed were very brittle. I have pictures of why I believe it is a hermaphrodite, which are pretty strange.

Thanks for all the input guys...i got good pictures tonight...she has a 1' nub on her left and a button on her right...hopefully if stays small and in velvet :)

this is a yearling doe on our farm

Have you started a semen list yet? Can you post full pedigree? Must be unreal breeding!

Texas Tea is sire... many people have said you could breed him to a billy goat and grow a huge buck... guess that stands for growing antlers on a doe as well!!!

Ok issac, time to post a between the legs photo so we can confirm that is a doe :) just kidding, congrats on a unique critter.
