New to this so this may be a dumb question. How often will a 2 year old 8 point buck turn into more than an 8 pointer from 3 years old on? Thanks so much for your help. Just curious

Not sure really. Depends on genetics. I would say that if its just an 8 @2 then sell him and get a better buck with more frame and points. .I would not want any 8 pointers at 2

Jlunn14......... To answer your question.........if he is an 8 point at two....that really does not tell you his future....it depends on what kind of 8 point........it would be better if he was a 10 point or 12 point.......but.......there are 8 points that would crush a lot of 10 and 12 points....so....you need to look at his mass....his width....his tine length and his over all frame.........if he does not have any promise with that...then you need to probably replace him......look at the whole package....not so much the points......just my humble opinion....

Not to agrue with what Dennis said..................But....LOL.........................Tines are SCORE.............Score is MONEY.......................MONEY...............Is WHAT PAYS THE BILLS!

In My Opinion....................Breed With Uptine,Mass,Beam Length,Decent Width and a Pedigree that has PROVEN PRODUCTION in PRODUCING.......QUALITY Offspring that sell at 2

Sorry Dennis just my opinion!.............For what thats worth! LOL

He has about 24 inch beams, about 19-20 inches wide, about 9 inch brows and g2s. And about 4-5 inch g3s. His frame is really good. Thanks for the help everyone. I was just curious

I don't know Wyane.......I think I was trying to say the same thing....but I guess I said it in a different way........never was good at communicating....LOL.....anyhow....I agree with you and pretty much meant the same thing.....

I have learned that it seems you can only get a slight idea what a buck might do, sometimes they really surprise, sometimes they make a minimal jump in score and sometimes they flat out disappoint. Its all on how long you wanna raise them, for example, I decided from now on If I have a two year old that I feel has little to no chance to hit 200" at three yrs old, then I will send him out as a 2 year old and not put anymore money into them. If I get 2 year olds scoring 160" or more with extras and some potential, I will raise them another year and hope for a 190" 3 year old at worst. I will say, that in my expirence I have never had a 2 year old typical 4X4 ever jump much more than 20 inches (most times not even that much) sometimes they might be a 9 or a 10 point the following year, but if they have no extras as a 4X4, they rarely score considerably more the following year. I hope this helps. If you do keep him, I hope he does well for you next year.

Here is a funny suprise story.Last year I had one of the most awful two year olds I ever raised. He was literally a spike on one side and a short tined 4 on the other, but he did have over 20" beams and a 20" spread. I was embarrassed to have him seen wit the others and wanted to shoot him in my pen and not even try and sell him, he was only 80-90" at best. For some reason I thought to grow him out this summer, I only had 3 other shooters to raise to sell for this fall so I thought what the heck, I'll keep him. I knew he Couldn't possibly be any worse at three, and the extra feed wouldn't hurt much, only $300 or so.

I sold him today. He was a beautiful 7X6 (but still had short tines), scored 162 2/8". I made a small profit on him, lol. A good surprise for once.
