Hi Everyone,

I am very new to the idea of deer farming and farming in general.  I come from a business background, but I have always wondered why there is not any venison being sold at the grocery store as I love to eat it.  After a quick google search I found out that there is quite a large community of deer farmers.

My business mind has me thinking about possible profits from selling home grown deer meat.  I have heard that "normal" farms (produce, cows) lose quite a bit of money each year.  Are there any room for profits through farming deer and selling them for their meat?  I do not have a ton of money but I am always interested in ways that I can add to my income as well as add to my quality of life (I love being outdoors but never get to do it enough).  If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

The price to raise deer would make it very hard to sell in stores.  All deer would have to go through the USDA facilities to make it a legal meat commodity.  When you figure the average doe will only produce 65 to 70 pounds of pure meat at three years old one can see her cost of production at 400 dollars a year in feed costs would make it a very high price meat commodity.  As Brett said it is also not legal in most States.  Go figure.

Venison sold in stores is not whitetail. It is either fallow or red deer. Both traditionally have a much lower cost of raising as far as feed input.

The profit is Whitetails is not in meat, but in hunting. Either running your own hunting preserve or selling deer to hunting preserves.
