Got home this afternoon to see my deer all spooked. Next thing I saw was a dog! I got down to my pens as fast as I could and couldnt believe my eyes. They (two dogs) were inside my yearling buck pen. 6 of the 10 are dead!

I lost 3 X Factor yearlings, 2 BRF Patrick Jr yearlings and a Hammer yearling.

I am sick. Its one of those things where you always think wont happen to you, but it did. No tags on the collars. The only good thing is I know EVERYONE around my house and I will find out who owned the dogs. Someone is going to pay!

I guess it could be worse, they all could. be dead. The weird part is the 4 that are alive dont hardly have a mark on them and are now calm as can be. I think they like me better now after I relieved them of their problem.

WOW,Todd i think mad would be an understatement. From the sounds of it you took care of the culprits. How the heck did they get in the pens? Good luck on finding the owners and i hope it all works out for ya's!!

Todd, that really stinks. So sorry that you lost those deer. Good luck in finding the owners of the dogs and I hope thet have to pay in full for damages.

Keep us posted as you move through whatever legal battle you get into. I really think that NADEFA should be aware of all situations like this so that any court cases that get settled can be used as precedence in future cases. Dog owners, trespassesrs, and just nosey people need to be aware of what is at risk when they let their dogs run, walk onto the property, etc. I've told my boys over and over, nobody had done any harm to my deer, but it's not a question of IF, but rather, WHEN. Sorry to hear for your loss, hope you are compensated...

Todd sorry for your loss, I know how you managed to reduce your # for quality. Phillip brings up a good point with NADEFA in helping future cases. Great to here your boys are so talented in baseball.

Todd, take pictures , video and file a report with the sheriff. We keep our deer on our land ----they should keep thier dogs on thier land.--call me. A picture of a pile of dead deer and the dead guillty dogs laying beside them makes quite an impression on the insurance companies. I will help you any way I can, I have been there. Darren:mad:

I am really sorry to hear that Todd. I wish you the best with this issue. I am only an hour or so away. Let me know if you need an extra hand to rough some people up. j/k I am sorry that you even had to deal with that.

Todd wish I could say or do something to help with your troubles!! Make sure to contact your vet ASAP to determine official cause of death for future litigation with dog owners. Call me if I can help you out with anything! Steve

The local redneck network worked hard and the owners of the dogs have been located. Now for the legal end of it.

todd, i know how ya feel! i just had dogs get into my pens. fortunately none of y deer died but i did have a goliath doe ai'd to bj abort her fawn and my 2 year old buck that was about 6 inches out of his head is now antlerless. glad to hear you found the dogs owners as i still don't know . good luck an givem what for!!!!

Todd, very sorry for all your loses! With all due respect, how did the two dogs get into your buck pens? What size dogs?

They dug under. One small dog and one medium size. They got into the furthest pen from my house where my view of the pen is limited. They dug in the wooded area where I cant see at all from the house.

We have had good success rates with swabs from bite wounds as far as identifying predators. If you have access to the dead fawns it may be worth swabbing the wound areas with dry Q-tips. Just store the Q-tips in separate paper envelopes and keep them cool and dry. That way if the owner tries to deny that it was their animal you could use the DNA evidence to prove otherwise.

Call me if you have any questions.

Todd two months ago I had a pit bull hit my deer pin, the first time I was not home . I could tell there was something wrong with the back gate was knock out of line. What save me was I pour premix concrete dry along the fence about four inchs up ,middle of the wire. He dug a big hole by the concrete but not under the fence. I know it to late now but it might help someone else.

Electric is the best. I won't deliver any deer to new farmers until they have their electric fence up. I just don't want them getting a bad taste or losing their investment. Reminds me, I have to go weedeat the fence.
