Is it possible to Import Deer from New Zealand? If so what are the requirements on our side?

What would be the advantage of importing deer in from New Zealand? I'm sure it would be uber expensive if it's allowed but I don't see it being allowed.

Benefits of it would be getting my hands on the New Zealand Red Deer genetics. It would put my breeding program years ahead of schedule. Even if it costs quite a bit of money to do it the Red Deer hinds are capable of producing offspring for enough years that I could make up a decent portion of the original cost. I'm not so worried about importing the stags because I can bring in semen and do an AI program its the Hinds that I am after even as few as 3-5 would make a huge difference in just a couple of years.

I can only imagine the stress that would be put on these animals by transporting them halfway around the world. We have trouble here in the states with deer surviving when transporting them from one state to another. When you add in the difference in climate from one state to another, it is an added stress. Can you imagine what the climate difference is from New Zealand to here. I would think that importing semen for an AI program would be about as good as it can get.

Good Luck to you in this adventure!

Yeah just red deer. I've found decent sources for pretty much anything else that I'm interested in.

I'm in Indiana right now Scott. I'm still a year or more out from actually buying anything but I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row. I'm scheduled to finish my degree Fall 2010 or Spring 2011. Which at that point I'll be heavily pursuing this option. I've located a few farmers that do have some NZ genetics in their herds but I've not located any that have the amount of genetics I would like. Most are only 1st - 3rd generation using NZ Semen.

hi Acutting,

Well I cant give any advice but I did want to tell you I am invious. Red Deer are the primary species I would like to some day raise. To start I would settle for Mule deer or white tailed deer, but ultimetly want to work into the reds.

As to importing them, you can import just about anything into the US if you have the money and contacts. The red deer in the US now had to get imported at one time or another by someone. Though I dont have any experence with deer, I do have experence with other species of livestock and from that experence I have to agree with paintedmeadows. I think Embryo transfers would be the way to go. NZ does a lot of work with ET as does the US. It is big in Cattle and becomeing bigger in horses and I dont see why it cannot be done with deer if it is not already.

Just my thoughts. Hopefully some day I will be there with you in raising reds. Take care.

Dustin

Finally found a couple farms that have the genetics I am looking for here in North America. Thanks for the replys from everyone on the importation issues.
