He was fine yesterday. Today he was looking skinny and dehydrated. Stumbling around when he was walking then he just layed down and died

Sorry. Unfortunately it does happen, you can only hope it doesn't happen very often. I remember some encouraging words forum member Scott Hienrich gave me once when I posted about loosing my favorite very tame friendly bottlefed buck, he said: "You'll make more". Those are some very true words. Deer breed every year. It sucks now, but You'll have more buck fawns in the spring to replace him.

I am truly sorry for your loss! I know how you feel, and I am so sorry. I just lost one of mine as well. Still crying. NOT as bad though.

That sucks! My condolences, it's always hard when you loose one especially if you have high hopes for it. You may want to do an autopsy to try and figure out what killed your deer.

Antlershed...thank you...well put words!!!

DD...no blood...no foam...wasnt breathing heavy....wasn't salivating....was just laying there...would get up...stumble a bit..and lay back down

Remi...sorry for your loss as well

Richi...what i was thinking but the signs just werent there...BUT a neighbor of ours 10 miles away has lost 13 to EHD so yeah...i'm VERY concerned

WMW...THAT SUCKS!!!!....I know this post says first deer lost but it is our 2nd now that i have settled down.. we bought 2 bred does to start..lost one after a week so haf our heard was gone...BUT i promise you the heard gets bigger every yr. we went from 2 to 1 to 43 in 3 yrs...so Keep your chin up!!!1

Autumn....we thought about that but would have to drive an hr so we are passing on it this time

Thank you ALL for your comments

EHD presents itself in several different ways and is not always easy to spot, esp if you cannot/don't put close eyes on em every morning/evening. This time of year I'd use a feeding schedule that runs the feeder dry and you have to put feed out twice a day, forcing the deer to come up to eat and be looked at. Close....

the swollen mouth/drooling is one and easy to spot

lameness in all four feet, not wanting to walk, and not coming to feed, no swollen mouth/drooling

and some just don't look right, you can see it in their eyes, dull and pained. No swollen mouth, no drooling, no lameness.

at the first sign of something wrong like the above hit em hard with Dex...yesterday.

sorry, dexamethosone, a steroid. Reduces swelling.

you can get it normally in a 2mg/ml or 4mg/ml dosage. You can get a vet to order you some 24-30mg/ml compounded dex from a compounding pharmacy enabling you to use a dart gun to treat with 1-2ccs(24-60mg of dex).

LMFAO

no offense taken Wayne, I fully understand the frustration. Sorry for your loss.

looking back did Roxy give you any indication that all was not well??

Well in Montana we had a good hard frost last night so my problem might be over. Fogged again tonight. We have lost six out of 130 head so consider myself lucky. The wild deer around me are dying by the hundreds and have been for thirty days.

a lot of it depends on the strain. We had type 6. Some lasted 5 days or so, some fine one feeding dead the next. Jack know what you mean, we lost 15 and felt lucky we didn't lose more. We have people all over Indiana losing deer. Holding my breath EVERY DAY.

Had a bad lightning storm last night. Sounded like it was on top and in the house. I had a very bad feeling when I woke up to it. This was our first real storm that the fawns have had. Found a doe fawn dead this morning from hitting the fence during the storm. uggghhh:mad:

I also lost one today, fine yesterday, stiff today. No obvious reason for dying but I did have a midge on my neck when I was doing chores tonight. Hopefully this gully washer will spread those flies around, maybe drown a few.

We checked ours VERY close tonight all looking good..EXCEPT one buck fawn with a stiff neck...but i think he may have hit the fence. We moved all the fawns away from momma's on Sunday.

I here you guys...NO WARNING SUCKS...cutting their head off...NOT FUN...cutting the antlers off sucks..all of it SUCKS...what really sucks is it seems like we are just sitting back and waiting for the next one to go....spray the fields...get what we can on the deer..what else s there to do?
