This is going to tick some of you off most likely. But just maybe this post will save a life. Maybe even YOURS!
Often during an aircraft evacuation there are injuries. We as pilots know this is a likelihood and for that reason we are not quick to make that call to evacuate a plane. So rest assured when we do make the call it is for a dang good reason! Most likely a reason that means people will die if they don't get off the plane FAST.
Part of an aircrafts certification is showing it can be completely evacuated in 90 seconds. That means when the call is made to get out you don't have time to look for a coat, put on your shoes, grab your phone, grab a bag from under the seat in front of your or for God's sake grab a bag out of the overhead bin. When the call is made everyone must stay calm and in an orderly manner head towards the nearest exit that is not blocked by fire.
Often fatalities during an evacuation are the result of getting overcome with smoke and or fire before getting out of the aircraft. Here are steps I as a very seasoned traveler take.
Leave my shoes on until at least well into the air. At least 10 minutes.
Leave the window shades open until a couple minutes after takeoff. Through those windows is where you will see the smoke and fire and know what exits or which side of the aircraft to avoid.
Look around from your seat and see where the nearest exits are. Have more than one option in case one is unusable.
At night for sure if not every time I count how many rows away my row is from an exit. If it is dark, smoke filled you may not be able to see the exit and need to feel your way to it.
Do NOT take any bags with you while exiting the plane! If it was valuable the airline can replace it. And if not ask yourself if your willing to die for that bag. Or be the reason others died!
Look at the pic of the people who evacuated the aircraft recently in Las Vegas NV. If I had my way EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WITH BAGS WOULD BE CHARGED WITH ENDANGERING PUBLIC SAFETY!!!
