For the first time in recent years we have a lot of breeding options to consider. One of the options involves a group of 19 yearling bucks that are very impressive wide typicals. All 19 have the same sire , a 2 year old 288" 7x7 frame that was 27"wide with Extras and drops. The 19 bucks have 22 half sisters that also have the same sire.

To maximize the qualities of this genetic , do you breed the sisters back to the sire ? Or do you breed the sisters back to the best of the half brothers? Or do you continue to breed as we have been and introduce breeders from our other sires?

We have never had a group of yearlings like this. No slouch in the herd. Many 6x6 frames . 17-22" wide heavy frames. And it appears good height coming on the 2s ,3s , and 4s.

Greatly appreciate your thoughts

I would go two ways with the group.  I would breed half of his does to the best yearling buck.  The other half back to the sire.  Those fawns produced should be breed to an outcross with AI.  I would assume this is where your best stock will come from.   I would continue to breed the old sire back to the does you bred him to make more good stock.

That's exactly what I would also Jack, then all your bases are covered! Congrats Kevin on a great bunch of bucks! That's always a good feeling and fun to look at!!

Arrowed1 do you have a photo and pedigree of the sire to share? Semen?

I am in Utah scouting mule deer for an August bow hunt. The sire is a Dave Brezinka buck that I bought as a two year old. I don't have paperwork with me but he is an AI deer of there's that came from Matrix and Lakota on top but I don't remember the bottom. I will update when I get home in a week or two. I have the pedigree which includes photos. Name is Patron'

we beat him up a bit live breeding 26 does as a 2 year old so he went backwards on his antler growth as a 3 year old but he is kicking out a lot of antler this year. I will try and get some pics when I get home.

Kevin,

Well I got my 75% white mule doe fawn, wish I would have had a male fawn.  You going to have a use for that monster mule deer buck your going to get, If not send me his testicles but buck testicles I have had from that area in Utah were not good just a little to early for good semen.

I had a buck fawn from Lakota last year out of a BRF Patrick JR.  Sure hope I get a good one out of that  but right now he is in the middle of the pack of yearlings.

Our 50% white mule deer doe put 3 brown fawns on the ground that of course are 75% mule deer. 2 bucks and 1 doe fawn. Mule deer scouting is going tough here. Storm last Tuesday night washed out a lot of the trails that we need to access on the south end of our unit. We are breaking camp and heading to the north end of our unit tonight. The Manti area is new to me but I have a couple friends that have pushed the high. End of that ground for elk. After a few days , my Minnesota lungs are finally functioning properly , kinda. Seeing lots of mule deer but not the ones we want. ..yet.
