Looking for information on vaginal AI; I’ve read a lot of info on the net about the subject, but can’t find any information on seminars. I am new to the industry and this will be my first breeding season. I live in Kentucky and don’t mind to travel out side of the state.

No problem, glad to help. I didn't invent the internet but I'm glad I could give you the info you were looking for.;)

A/I really isn't a big deal. This will be our 9th year I think and until last year my wife Laurie did all our A/I as well as for several other farms. The only reason really we decided to have a "pro" do ours is because I need Laurie's help on my side of the drop chute and she can't be in two places at the same time. That and when you start selling deer that are being sold A/I'ed it gives the buyers more confidence in what they are spending their money on if a pro does the work.

Good luck!:)

Roger do you do any LAP AI? We did it once but don't think we will do it again, had good results but not sure it is in the best interest of the deer

No James we do not do Lap A/I. We also don't think it is in the best interest of the animal. (That whole topic was argued once before on here and I seemed to be in the minority that time)

I think Lap is a tool that can be useful in certain instances but is over used around the country. One of the bigger named vets told me, "Lap is for farms who can't get good results doing vaginal a/i. If your getting better than 60% you don't need to do it." Those were his words and not mine.

I also think each farm should look at their own personal pasture conditions. Places that have wet or muddy pastures might want to avoid Lap a/i.

But again, what do I know.

Take care James.

This may sound like a stupid question but Im gonna ask anyway. For those of you who vaginally AI, how do you split the straws ? What all is needed for this and when is the straw actually cut etc... A lot of the farmers selling semen straws are now offering a "guarenteed conception" if the semen straw is only split once. If the guarentee is good and you can breed 2 does with a single straw rather than just one then money-wise, the farmers doing the AI process would be foolish not to split the straws once. I know Roger posted a video on how to AI a deer but I didnt know if it showed how to split a 1/2 cc straw or not and I tried and couldnt locate the video to watch again anyway. Everyone chime in here and help this simple-minded Okie out if you will. Thanks in advance! Jeff

You just push the plunger halfway then push other half in next doe. A more exact way is by useingApple creeks inseminater and this method is done by emptying semen into some more extender and then sucking it back up into two straws. Apple creek has classes on this. Contact them for more info they are great to deal with and have state of the art equipment .

Thanks Ivy Hollow and Virgil for your help. Dont know what I'd do without this site. Jeff

P.S Don't forget to watch the Packers Beat the Eagles 3:00 pm

Scott when is Brett and the vikings schedualed to beat the packers. Thats the one I want to see again.

The New York New Deer Farmers class including AI'ng has been canceled until next year. Too many of the seminar speakers backed out and they didn't want to give people a second rate class. It's been rescheduled of next year on October 8 & 9.
