My four year old breeder had a run in with EHD last year.

He recovered and looked good by breeding season.

I give him five does to live cover. It looks like he only got the job done on one doe. She is still big pregnant and I am not sure when she will fawn.

I watched him mount and breed all five does in December.

1. Will EHD shut him down?

2. Will he be ok for this season or is he done breeding?

3. Should I try him this year after he missed four does last year.

I appreciate any and all advice

Thanks Brent Thomure

I would get a vet to come out and draw him. They can give you a reduced price if you just want to see if he is sterile.

Brent,

My guess is the high fever rendered him sterile after he had EHD. Yes collection would be a good idea to see if he is fertile. My guess is he will be fertile now as fever would only harm him for a time by making him temporary sterile.

Brent, In my opinion dont use him again. Even if you test him and he is not sterile. What if he only breeds 25% again? Then you will be waiting another year for more fawns. How many years are you going to feed those same does before you find out they didnt grow anything thing but a 7 pointer @ 2 yrs old, just saying. Can you sell him and buy something else? Thats not a guarantee either but thats a better choice I think. Eldon

the first buck we bought had been on a farm that had EHD. HE never showed any signs/symptoms. We were going to collect him and nothing with smaller than normal testicles. He died from capture myopathy when we moved him. I sent the testicles to the pathology lab and NADA. We would have lost a whole year with 12 does. Sometimes things happen for a reason.

Had a buck last year got EHD survived it only to get Blue Tongue.........His head split open from the fever and swelling ear to ear back of his head and over his left eye! Knocked him down treated and cleaned maggotts from his head..............Grosses thing you ever saw!

Layed around and barely moved for over 2 weeks carried feed and water to him! When he had recovered we put him in with 3 does just to see what he would do.........We had bought him as a "Breeder" he is a Poncho/Thunder/Blazers Mother

He hobbled around as he sluffed his hooves from his ordeal...............3 does bred with a record of 6 bucks and 2 doe fawns!:)

So it CAN go EITHER way!!:)

Best of luck...............That's a tough call!:)
