Looking for Work as a Hired Hand?

I've got next to nothing to do this next year besides high school and waste away, and I was wondering if anyone in the Fairfield, California area would consider taking my on.

I've never worked with deer before, and I don't know much about raising them on a farm, but I'm really interested in learning - and I would work for free until I got it down.

I work cheap too, super minimum wage, and I do have some experience in farm work.

I used to work as a stable hand at a horse ranch in Vacaville when I was younger (I'm only fourteen now), and I also go out to my Aunt's every summer to help out on her alpaca and llama ranch. I'm there right now actually, but when I get back on July 20th, I'm looking for a job and a way to keep busy.

I'm not sure if anyone would really be interested in a part time teenager, but like I said, I work cheap.

I'd even be interested in an internship if being paying someone as young as me sounds unreasonable.

Anyways, I'm really interested in any kind of deer farming, but especially reindeer. I might want to raise them someday, as I know I definitely want to raise some sort of livestock.

Thank you, Elizabeth.

Hi Elizabeth,

There are not many reindeer owners in CA. One large farm down east of the LA area that I know of and one or two other owners with just a few reindeer. You might want to contact the farm near LA and see if they need any summer help this upcoming summer. You can check out their site at www.allaboutanimalszoo.com.

Obtaining a holding permit/license in CA is very difficult to get for reindeer. There are other states where getting a license is much easier. You can check out requirements online through either the Department of Fish & Game or Dept of Ag.

Reindeer are quite different animals to raise than regular deer of any other kind. They are more like owning ponies, but with antlers. We call ours 'goats with antlers' because if you don't watch carefully, they eat anything they can get at and that causes problems for them. If you want to talk more about reindeer, you can contact me at timberviewfarmORatyahoodotcom.
