lost month old to bloat

just lost a month old fawn to bloat. noticed this morning he didnt want to eat, stomach was bloated. gave Mylicon drops then baking soda water drench.. walked to get supplies to tube and BOOM.........gone.... :eek::( why always the favorite? was just fine yesterday



this is my third death with fawns this year (2 were too far gone when i got them), but i have to take in acct that these are rescues and sometimes i have no control....but still SUX

I was so scared when Rosa was little that she would bloat, I only fed her goat milk, her formula (with bottled water), veggies/fruits and young leaves, shoots, few dandelions (which she loves). I feared giving her any grain at all, and she wasn't really into any other stuff like that.



I checked her stool twice and she hand NO parasites or bacteria. Coccidia is one that we really have to look out for.



I think the deer farmers even have a way to vaccinate against bloat- but you've gotta talk to Scott H. or a DEER DVM to confirm this.



I was just super lucky w/ her stools which btw took a really long time to pelletize (almost 2 months)... but she had no bacteria or parasites, just sort of mushy stool for a long time. I think it's because she wasn't eating enough browse initially.
 
ive had em tested, no parasites it was just so fast...i have seen him nibble on grasses, so i wonder if the wet morning stuff got him im still WOW, way too much before 8 am..
 
clostridium type A will kill them past like that with bloat, always have c+d antitoxin on hand and some pen G. It may not save the deer its 50-50 but only treatment that I know of. Sorry for loss!

i do have it just didnt work fast enuf i mean like in an hour i even called my vet (who treats deer) and he said when it hits that fast not alot he can do either.
 
Rene did you have a necorp done? Neeb may be right here . We have found that and not always but there has been an assocation with bloat and clostrial perfringens . We found that the first sign of bloat we treated with heavy does of penicillin and A & D antitoxin. PM a girl up in the North East by the name of Liz Code . She can tell you more . She`s on the forums now and then .
 
no necrop done... these are rehabs, not farm raised, and all the expenses come out of my pocket and never go back in, so I am limited. i am def going proactive harder with the rest though..

Rene`, Liz is a rehaber also . I think she may be able to give you some helpful info . Good luck with the rest. Weather wild or behind a fence they all need cared for . :):):) Yes Rene` the min you bond to one something will always happen . :( Keep your chin up your doing a wonderful thing . :)

do searches on the boards for recommended vaccines. I never have Rosa the C&D antitoxin but from what i read and hear, that and EHD and Covexin-8 (I gave mine) are standard vaccines to give. There is a schedule to be followed, of course, right? for fawns. Sorry, I don't mean to sound instructive or in any way bossy. hug to you.
 
thanks Mitch......yeah i have been stocking my medicine chest with more and more. i dont think it never ends, because when u think you have it all, you need something else.. my others are doing great, hubby tells me sometimes its just nature. i have a blind buck that has stolen my heart and i am torn on what to do with him. trying meds to see if it helps, cause i sure hate to put him down.. and now i finally got my license so i can legally buy deer and keep... so i know its in my blood, cause i eat breathe and bore everyone to tears with my deer talk,,,,,,,lol got an injectible from my vet (who is a deer vet) to give any that i get that are young young.. AGAIN, my deepest gratitude to ALL of you here for everything you do
