it would likely be cheaper to buy good sexed semen.  I have heard that Lester Eicher has great semen out of Revenue.


Cost is 5-7k per collection.  If it is good it is worth it but if not you have wasted a lot of money.

I was thinking maybe I would A.I. with all male semen this year. It would be first time to ever A.I.

I have a two year old Hardcore son. Can I still draw him this year and split to get the male semen?

About what would this cost? Or would it be cheaper to just buy male semen?

I am just looking to raise shooters.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

If you want to draw wait untill you get 2 bucks you want to draw, draw them, mix the semen together and send in. If you are only doing shooters the dna is not an issue but if you wanted to you could still dna the fawns back to one or the other.

It is a little more risky to draw on bucks this late. Some of the bucks are producing less than they would in fall. When you sex it, you want the best draw you can get. We drew on Alley Oop last week and had an excellent draw, but I think we were extremely lucky. We did not sex this draw.

My guess is that Sexing Technologies would not allow it if they know about it.

I have not had 2 bucks worthy of drawing yet in my eye's but i know of some that raise just shooters and mix semen collections together. Myself i cant see the gain of having 2 bucks together and then having to go back and find the dna on whatever fawns there are. More so of just raising shooters but i guess it falls in line with the embryo thing and how far the deer world has came.

The cost to draw semen, get it sexed and then do Lap AI is pretty steep. If you have decent bucks, you are just as far ahead to live breed them without all the extra expense and hassle.

Well thats what i thought also. I guess in the end its all about the shooters. The way i believe i works is, 2 good dna'd breeders are drawn and sent in for sexing, the does get bred with the male semen and if one of the buck fawns happen to blow up to sell for a breeder then that fawn is dna'd back to see which of the 2 bucks drawn are the dad. If only shooters are sold then of course no testing is needed. I believe thats the thought on the whole process.
