Misting System Results (Good or Bad)???

I wanted to get a thread started to get an idea do what results farmers who invested in misting systems were seeing? There seems to be 2 companies selling automated misting systems, NAWPS and Deer Guardian. I've interacted with both companies and know that they both basically promise zero losses to EHD. Neither companies guarantee perfection but will lead you to believe that if you make the investment in their systems your EHD problems will be a thing of the past. I really want to know whether their concept holds water? The idea makes sense and would seem to work if implemented correctly.

Here is my own personal results: I used NAWPS to install my system and I had a lot of problems with the units working correctly from the start. I should note that NAWPS has since changed ownership and I have no experience with the new ownership but the old ownership was terrible. I had numerous problems with their work and spent most of last summer and this summer getting the kinks worked out. Anyway, I believe I know have a properly working system that has been spitting out hundreds of gallons of chemical daily all summer long. My original chemical formula came from NAWPS at install time and this spring I worked with Deer Guardian. Based on their advice I changed my chemical formula. My system ran for about 90 seconds at various times about 12 cycles per day. I had around 220 deer in my pens this spring and that number grew to 340 after fawning. We made it clear to September without any losses and were feeling invincible while farms around us here in Missouri lost entire herds. When the EHD hit it was unstoppable. My ranch manager and his staff spent hundreds of hours sitting on buckets in the pens searching for any of the early signs of EHD and when they had a suspect they treated very aggressively. My team worked their asses off day and night working to break fevers and save lives. To this day we are still losing animals and the latest count is 80 head lost. That's about 30% of our herd lost to EHD. We continued to run our misting systems and spray cedar oil daily.

My personal experience is that the misting system failed my farm. We spent nearly $30,000 having it installed and my weekly running costs for chemical are about $500/Week. I can't say for sure that the system saved one life. Since I have it I will continue to utilize it and hope its doing some good.

What results are others seeing?

I had a Deer Guardian system installed last year and was beyond disappointed with its performance. We lost nine deer to EHD including a 315", 286", several in the 220's and a super doe. Basic fly traps killed more mosquito's (approximately 1000 to 1) than the $10,000 unit. Service from those guys was beyond poor as well.

Early this summer i posted my thoughts on an EHD thread someone else started. Shots were fired in my direction but i expected it. Seems i been preaching about the reality of what we are all facing and what to expect. Very few have publicly agreed with me. Im kind of a straight up person........ Like me or not, what u see is what u get. The old owner/manager of NAWPS also had a post in which he boasted of near zero% losses. I personally told him not to go there, as those shoes were too big for him. I had my worst year in 2011. This summer i only saw two animals present with EHD. Both are alive and healthy today. I mention these things as brett1 asked for our opinion. I have never spent or wasted a penny on a spray system, but per my lengthy summer post i stated, that trying to raise deer in a bubble would not work. Help maybe......but in no way be worth the expense. I know too many farmers in which to form my personal conclusive data.. I will leave the EHD vaccine's out of this as they fall in the same area...........grade F-........what a shame......

My opinion the best protection will be an ****EFFECTIVE**** vaccine, PERIOD!!! Until then this discussion will come up every year. Until a company is willing to develop one and ***CHALLENGE*** it then it will all be a guessing game as to what helps and thousands if not millions of dollars wasted every year. I have read that LSU is doing research in this area. This is where we need to be spending our money. Maybe NADEFA should do some polling to see how many doses of vaccine would be sold each year if we had an effective vaccine. This information could be presented to a reputable vaccine manufacturer and might spur some interest for a company to manufacture EHD vaccine.I do not think that they know how profitable it would be to them is why there has not been a good one made to date. They have to make money to develop it and we need to show them they would. If EHD affected the cattle industry at this magnitude it already would have been on the market, guaranteed. Maybe this could be a task in the future for the cervid work group that is forming. We need data!!!!!!

There has been some recent research development that could help develop an effective vaccine.

"The technology that we're describing in this paper can be used to develop a vaccine against any virus, any parasite, any fungus, whereas this was never possible before the development of recombinant attenuated bacterial strains like those produced in our lab," Curtiss says.

I was going to try a misting system, the more I looked in to it and the less I wanted it. Vaccine's I know they dont work. Every deer I lost had been given vaccine's, treated 3 time's this year, all a waste of money. The farm's that use the fogger seem be be having the best result's and if I do buy something that's what I would use. I was told that the midge is only active for a few min's just after daylight and most active the last 15-20 min's right before sunset. The farm's that fog right at daylight and a hour before sunset seem to be having good luck.

Misting, as used singularly, will mitigate the midge presence, but will only kill what it reaches...meaning there remains a recurrent threat from the culicoides vector, as their breeding grounds and habitat remain intact. Not to mention culicoides that "piggyback" onto the farm or preserve on deer making their way back and forth from their water source. The vector is borne by the female of the culicoides species, which has a flight span of only around 2km; making those "piggyback" midges an even greater threat. There is considerable work and research being done now at LSU, and Oklahoma State University in both EHD treatment, and eradication of the culicoides vector. OSU, in conjunction with a private company, has developed an insecticide; non-toxic, as a water soluble powder that can be applied either dusted, or with a leaf blower, or ULV sprayer...initial results, including a sizable residual kill-rate, are promising. That being said, no one thing is going to be effective. It takes and integrated pest management system to mitigate the vector, and lower the possibility of EHD. I have additional info if anyone likes, just message me..

I have a brand new A1 fogger/mister for sale...it is a three point hitch that goes on the back of a tractor.....never been used....I bought it and it is just to big for my needs....itis suppose to fog up to 150 ft.......anyhow it has been sitting under roof in my barn since I got it....just needs dusted off and it is ready to go...........looking to get 1,500.00 for it.....that is a stead.......holds fifty five gallons at a time........let me know if interested...

I'm not here to bash another misitng system person or company I'm only going to share my results with our new misitng system. This past spring we had George Tunall with Deer Gaurdian install a new system for us. George & his crew installed a very professional & neat system. His crew worked great around our deer. THey installed the system to the enginered specs & educated us on maint. & up keep. We have had excelent results with our system and the whole Deer Gaurdian Crew. George is quick to reply to a call if we have a questions and is always eager to help. If the system is installed to Deer Gaurdian Specs the system will work. Now with anything there is maintance to be done & if you keep your system maintained and running properly you will not have any problems. We personally believe in the Deer Gaurdian System. It has protected our herd this year ( not to mention George is a great guy & easy to deal with)

I have had a Deer Guardian system for 2 years. I honestly at first was skeptical because of some of the stories and experiences I had heard from customers of George's competitors. I can say that without a doubt, I believe in the system and have amazing results.....I have pretty much have no bugs what so ever and my herd health is well above the heard past. There was one time when I noticed we were starting to have some bugs as with a simple call to George, and a minor adjustment to the solution, we were able to take care of the issue in a short period of time. I highly recommend deer guardian and feel it has helped my program.

I know first hand MANY folks here in Missouri who had

A High Dollar Misting System

Missouri State Vaccine

Texas State Vaccine

Texas "Miracle Shot"

And a Death toll of 50 to 100+ Animals................LOST!!!!!!!!

I'm NOT sold on a misting system or Vaccines that claim to prevent EHD!

Just my own opinion based on my own observations!
